Default Floor mat and lining

Hi all.

As Im just about finished sorting out the floor in my 36 I need to look at what to put down on the floor. Would rather not use Jute as am worried if hold too much moisture. Is there something else that goes down under the rubber mat?

With respect to the rubber mats, is there a better supplier. This isnt a full resto but Im hoping to keep it as close as reasonable to an original looking car even if Im not restoring the exterior.

Thanks!

Most reproduction floor mats come with jute backing and I do not believe that jute itself will hold moisture. Dennis Carpenter is going to release a new 36 Ford front floor mat in Taupe color that is supposed to be correct and much better than other reproduction mats. I am waiting to hear when they will be available, since I want to replace my old reproduction mat.

Pete, all 36 mats had a jute backing. The floor also had a rubberized covering on it to help sound-proof the floor. It was about 1/16" thick and had a consistency between tar paper and inner tube rubber.

Let's hope that Dennis does the '36 mat in Benton Gray rather than taupe, as '35 was the last year for that color mat.

Thanks guys. Most of the sound proofing is long gone by the looks of it and I am 3/4 of the way through painting the floor with a rust inhibit paint. Whilst not OEM in nature it should help preserve it which is my main aim. Are any of the current repo mats better than others?

I am using a material that is approx. 1/16"thick and was some left over from waterproofing a basement. It has a paper peel off on one side and I still use a 3m spray glue to install. I think it is a melroll product. It sticks and hard to remove. I ran out and used some leftover window flashing with foil on one side. It is about 8" wide roll which you can buy at most any Lowes or Home Depot.

Here's the scoop on '36 mats - as I understand it, and I could well be wrong.

The molds used to make the mats were at one supplier, over time they got worn and deteriorated. When you got a mat, there was a warning from the parts supplier i.e. LeBaron Bonney the mats were imperfect. The only other solution was to grab up one of the used ones that appeared on *bay from time to time. Even those were very brittle and tore easily.

That's the end of the story so far. Although there seems to be a large demand for a '36 mat in the right color, AFAIK none is available yet.

THanks Henry. Am I right in assuming the '35 and '36 would be the same?

I was going to order a floor mat, but seeing as how I won't be installing it for another year (or so ), guess I'll hold off and see if a better one comes on the market.

To add to what Henry/Dad said above. We did replace the front mat in our '36 Phaeton with an original style but older one. Good idea, not the greatest outcome.

It seemed to me that either it was not the greatest product to begin with, or it was nearly past it for still being pliable. It was/is just too fragile and after about three years, and several times in and out of the car, it has some tears, as much as 4 inches long. We keep the rubber mat in, and have a piece of carpeting cut from the mat as a pattern that we put on top of the rubber mat. The carpet comes out on special occasions.

That's what I recall.

The 35 Ford front floor mat has a diamond style while the 36 Ford front floor mat is a ribbed style. Page 44 of the 1935-36 Ford Book published by the Early Ford V-8 Club.
