Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Chuck, you know Mike, he's always first to get his hands in Ford grease... As usual, we all pitch in but, someone has to document the fun on film, or else, no photos...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I have been so pleased with the electric fuel pump conversion I did on the '39 CS, using the OEM pump that Marv converted to a "pass through", that I've decided to install the same set up in the '39 LZ. Yesterday I picked up all the components, and a few weeks ago I converted an OEM fuel pump to the "pass through" configuration. If I can achieve the same results with the Zephyr as I have with the CS, I'll be a happy camper! I have not had any Vapor Lock issues at all with the '39 CS after installing this set up and, as an added bonus, with constant fuel pressure, the overall performance of the '39 CS has improved.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Vic,
Did you use any sort of pressure regulator with your electric fuel pump installation? Which pump did you use? Thanks |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I can't remember what type of electric fuel pump(s) you are using but they do not last forever. Make sure you install them in an easy location with plug style connectors and such for easy "roadside" repairs. I am still using the mechanical pumps in my cars but I also have an electric pump for start-up and emergencies as you know. Also, at every fill-up, I put a cap full of Yamalube. Boaters use this stuff to keep their rings free and to combat the effects of ethanol in the gas. Their engines sit for long periods between uses (as do ours drom time to time) and a few boating friends I know swear by this stuff. So far it has been very cheap insurance and does its job very well. If you are not interested in the "ring free" properties, Startron is another product that will work just for the ethanol issues we all know and love.
One thing I would like to say - I have never had any vapor lock issues anywhere else but Florida. LOL! |

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Sidevalve8ba, I'm using an Airtex 12 volt, low pressure, 2 - 4 Lbs. electric fuel pump (sorry, I don't have the part # handy) on the Zephyr with a Mr. Gasket fuel pressure regulator #9710, (set at 2.5 Lbs.) I also install an additional fuel filter between the gas tank and the electric pump, I'm using a Mr. Gasket filter #9746. I have this same set up on our '51 F-1 & '47 Convertible. The '39 CS is still 6 volt positive ground so I use the same pump in a 6 volt version. When using the 6 volt pump you need to reverse the wires, making the pump ground wire the "hot" wire for a positive ground system. Additionally, I install a "kill switch" for the pump under the dash or in another convenient, easy to reach place.
Tom, I seldom had Vapor Lock issues when I lived up North however that was also before that started contaminating gas with "corn"! Here in Florida, as you know, the warm temps combined with the "Corn" gas, make a perfect scenario for the introduction of Vapor Lock... Apparently, I have successfully vanquished Vapor Lock with the aforementioned modifications. As added insurance, I also carry an OEM style fuel pump in each of the vehicles I've converted. Yes, I leave the push rod in each, just incase...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
A question about wiring?
When did Ford go from cloth covered wiring harnesses to the black tape covering? I'm thinking it was for the '49 model year, but would like to confirm that. Thanks.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
On the trucks they were still using it on the F1s, somewhere around 56 they switched. I can check if you are interested in the specific year. I am using F1 53 wiring style for a guide on my 33 5 window, and the 53 is still cloth wiring. Noticed the fuel pressure regulator you were using. There have been a lot of issues with that regulator, might keep an eye on it, leaks and improper pressure regulation. I always liked the Holley 12-804.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Looks like after 48 they were still using cloth wiring but started using a mixture of cloth and tape looms. In the pickups the wiring switched to plastic in 56 and with tape looms.

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Thanks JSeery, my '51 F-1 has a combination of tape and cloth and my '53 Convertible has tape, as does our '53 F-100 Panel. The reason I'm asking is, my friend Don got a '50 Convertible and most, if not all, the original wiring had been removed by a previous owner...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Several suppliers sell original type wiring harnesses, if you can stand the price!

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
Thankfully, this isn't my car. I have gotten OEM style wiring harnesses for several of our cars, from places like Rhode Island wiring, Dennis Carpenter, Bob Drake and Tyree Harris. All have been excellent quality, and all are close in price. I'm not sure if Don wants to go with a stock looking harness for his '50 or a new style replacement harness...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
I've been away from the garage for almost two weeks so, I'm looking forward to getting back to playing with Flatheads this Saturday. Hopefully we'll be able to tie up some more loose ends on Don's '50 Rag Top, and get the headlights, taillights, ignition, etc., hooked up and installed in the Zephyr...

Re: What I Did on My Lunch Hour
We spent some time yesterday working on Don's '50 Ford Convertible, here are a few photos; the first one is of Mike & Don with the '50. After messin' with Don's car, we drove my '39 CS (2nd photo) to Keith's garage (last photo) to see some of his, and his Dad's, cars. I got all the components for the electric fuel pump mounted on the rear cross member of the Zephyr as well. Another fun day with Flatheads.
