Default trying to check function on 36 temp gauge

I had my '36 temp gauge rebuilt but am trying to test it before I 'sign off' on the rebuild. He said there had been a bubble in the line and he had cleared it to make it read right.

I dunked the sender unit probe into a cup of boiling water and the red liquid moved up to about the 3/4 level.

This is the first time I have seen one of these 36 temperature gauges in action. Does this sound about right?

Sounds like it's going in the right direction. G.M.

Thanks, I guess the question was more along the lines of calibration...i.e. does a 3/4 reading in boiling water sound about right.

There is a small scratch on the glass tube near the top, that line is 212-- boiling-- the 3 nos ones I have all read there at boiling
When put in freezer the liquid will go lower than the glass tube--freezing and warming usually gets rid of the bubble.

Thanks, so it appears my gauge would be in the middle around 180F....

Assuming that is where the engine runs then my gauge would show the middle when the engine is at normal running temp..

The tube is adjustable up and down in the housing. If your calibration is off after the rebuild, make another mark and adjust it to that. You may expect the color to fade in time, as the original colored fluid is not longer available, so no telling what your rebuilder put in there.

Thanks guys. As far as I am aware the original fluid was not replaced so is still in there.

I will use an infrared temp gun to see how she is running once installed and then get familiar with what this means on the gauge itself.

The tube is not adjustable. As the line enters the frame at the bottom it is crimped.
