Default Dana 41 question

How much axle end play is acceptable after the axle is bolted in?

I have 1/16 and 3/32.

The bearings have a bit of play in them but I don't know what the limits are. If they are used I'd expect a bit of play but new ones shouldn't have very much.

It is not the bearings which have the play. Not for sure but the play is between the retainer and the housing.

I've heard of folks purchasing bearings that are different than OEM in some way. The width might be off but I don't know. The retainer should hold it tight against the axle housing.

Is this in an F1, Mercury car, or a Ford station wagon?

Left that part out!

1950 F1.

That was my first thought after i found the bearings were tight. Both bearings are older replacement name brand bearings.....not sure what to think.

Welded up the retainers and still have .025 endplay. I am thinking the replacement bearings (25 years ago) were off the mark from the original ford units. I will be looking for a pair of nos ford bearings to replace these with.

The Timken P/N 514003 is listed as 1.083" width. You might compare that to the ones you have. Napa P/N is BRG 88128R. They are also listed at 1.083" width.

There is a note in the description that lists exceptions that include axles with retaining ring and Dana 44/60 but I checked the 49/51 Mercury parts catalog and it lists the 8M-1225-C at 1.080" width for both the Dana 41 and the 44 axles. These are the same as the F1 axle except the spring mounts are different. the Timken or NAPA part numbers should work OK.

Thank you. The .025 May be factory acceptable tolerance. Will see if any mechanics with firsthand experience jump in. I have a BCA 88128 installed.
