Default filling a new lead acid battery

when filling a new lead acid battery, you should add new acid until the plates are covered, right. Just till you no longer see the plate edges sticking out, right.

There are usually directions with a new dry stored battery. Most that I have seen say to cover the plats with about 1/4" of acid. This prevents the plates from being exposed if the battery is tilted or fast starts and stops expose plates.

A lead acid battery finds a new electrolyte level after it has been fully top charged. A battery should be monitored every so often during the top charge to insure the electrolyte is still above the plates. After it is fully charged a person can top it to its normal level. After that, a person should never add anything except distilled water to compensate for evaporation and high charge rate boil out.
