Default bought a 32 ford.. need to adjust the clutch

photo for attention..
because I will not be able to get a good photo down inside the transmission inspection cover!

I bought this 32 ford a few weeks ago. prior owner rebuilt engine / trans but never drove the car.
I had to adjust the clutch rod all the way out in order to move the car from the trailer to my garage and up and down my driveway a few times.

however I kit seem (after driving it a few 100 yards) that the clutch may need adjustment.. as the pedal must be pushed all the way to the floor to get any engaugement.

looking in the inspection cover the throwout bearing (with out pressing on the pedal) is approx 1 inch from the clutch fingers.. it is obvious that the individual fingers could be adjusted up ALOT however before I go through that proceedure.. is there anything else to consider?

Your description suggests that the previous owner did not adjust the clutch when it was installed. Now you get to do it. Unfortunately with a '32, that means pulling the engine and transmission together and that means removing the radiator, radiator shell and headlamp bar for starters.

Sounds almost like it has a short throw out bearing in it.

You obviously haven't fooled with older GM stuff. There were LONG & SHORT T/O bearings, with the longs being about an inch or so thicker (front to back). I guess Fords never got that complicated. Here's an example in the picture BELOW.

When looking through the inspection cover and foot off the clutch, is the fork and bearing pulled all the way back (or nearly) against the transmission? (the small return spring will be almost unstretched). If so, that's not the normal adjustment range. Maybe a shorter clutch rod was installed or some other linkage problem is present. Would lengthening the adjustment rod cure the problem?

The three fingers on the pressure plate will be almost flat... just a touch toward the transmission....when they are not touching the bearing. If so, a longer rod may fix this problem.

Not likely a broken pin in the fork given that he drove it a couple of hundred yards.
