Default Od cover plug removal

What is the easiest way to remove the overdrive snap ring cover plug ?
In the past when I was sure was going to tear down the tranny completely I would just drill a hole in the center of the cover plug and then stick something thru the hole and rock the cover off....Can the plug be removed without drilling to avoid metal flakes going in the tranny ??? Ideas ?

If it's a soft plug you might be able to punch a hole in it with a screwdriver or some such. Or possibly distorting it and prying it out working an edge. You could always go ahead and drill it out and then flush the trans with diesel or some other solvent.

Don’t drill it if you aren’t planning on going through the transmission. The plug is 1-1/2” round, however the casting below is only open under part of it. Use a sharp chisel and pierce the plug in the middle. A screwdriver can be used to pry it out. You have to have a fresh plug to replace it when you’re done.

Instead of a cover plate for tailshaft bearing snap ring access like the older Ford R10 & T85 R11 transmissions. The T86 used a soft plug.
