I forgot about the town car. Of course, they had them.
As for the Chevy and Hudson photos above, I've seen many of these late 20s cars with the landau irons and you see them on taxis in the old movies as well.
I'm not sure it's a good look for a standard Model A 'family sedan'.

This brings up a pet peeve of mine: So often I see the left bars on the right side and vice versa. Some owners evidently don't see the difference.

x2 - guess I'm hypersensitive about it since I restored a Sporty years ago. The bars should look like a letter "S" on the passenger side and a reverse "S" on the driver's - the center "knob" should be toward the back on both sides.

I like them on the cars that came with them and on the Town Car that didn't, but not on the blindback more-door.

I believe that the bars came in lefts and rights, so they would look the same on both sides.
Some people have reversed them on Cabriolets, so they don't sag.

I can't find my picture but there is a 28 or 29 fordor at the Thomas Eddison Museum in Ft. Myers, Fl that has the landau irons on it. The color is wrong for the car so I just assumed that someone put them on. Always bothered me that they had an incorrectly restored car at the Eddison/Ford estate.

The purpose of fake Landau irons is to draw your eye away from white wall tires.

REAL Landau irons were designed to inflict heinous blood blisters on the hands of innocent bystanders who foolishly volunteer to help fold down a rag top.

I believe the bars on my Sporty were original and yes, they were left and right (had a seam on the side against the top fabric) - the center section was a separate crimped-on piece. It's hard to find pix on the web of the passenger and driver sides of the same car, so...

The first pic shows the correct passenger side installation - like I said, it looks like a letter "S" with the fake center "knob" projecting toward the rear of the car. The second pic shows the correct driver side installation. Note it is not the same as the passenger side, but is a mirror image - that is, a backward "S" although the "knob" still projects to the rear. The third and fourth pix show the incorrect passenger and driver side installations - it appears the bars have been switched side-to-side and turned upside-down.

Cabbies are a different breed of cat - dunno much about them.

You know what would look really weird? The oval window like the business coupe on a town car
