foordomatic problem
55 tbird pukes oil out the dipstick. hot or cold. Vent is NOT plugged. Fluid level does not register on the dipstick, but it registered full when this started. Car runs and drives normally', exceept for the occasional cloud behind the car as the trans pukes oil. The dipstick is correct for the car, and the transmission is air cooled, thus no tranny lines. Any ideas?

Re: foordomatic problem
my guess is the filter is plugged, its not letting the trans pump pump the oil in the trans back to the converter fast enough, the converter holds most of the oil, so when the oil from the converter is pumped to the trans it over fills the trans causing the extra oil to be pushed out, some tri 5 chevys with the cast iron trans had a simular problem, they wouls set for a week and the oil in the converter would leak back into the trans, filling it up and the oil would come out the dipstick

Re: foordomatic problem
I had a similar problem from a mile o matic 59 Edsel trans gave it a service and put the right amount of fluid that the workshop manual said I don't go off the dipstick as I found it not to be accurate enough , since I done this service it has been fine ever since

Re: foordomatic problem
The filter is not plugged. and it will blow trans oil in slugs every couple of miles until it stops moving. That kind of leaves out the possibility of too much oil in the trans. Could it be a converter problem?

Re: foordomatic problem
I have been fooling with this issue for 3 years. It is now an issue that it is not going to beat me.

Re: foordomatic problem
The Ford-O-Matic shop manual has fluid flow illustrations for every gear selection. Look at the fluid flow diagram labelled "Control diagram-High ratio". See if that helps.

Re: foordomatic problem
These units have a secondary rear pump that turn and provides pressure only when the outputshaft is turning while driving. What you should do is idle the car for long time in gear but without moving. Have someone measure the fluid level every 10-15minutes. You can raise the idle at times to (stall-test style) increase mainline pressure again while having someone else read the level. Now, if everything is "OK" we can proceed to testing the rear pump. Let me know.....
If your vent is truly perfectly "clear and open" this problem will be interesting to solve. I intend to help you the best way I can.

Re: foordomatic problem
There is an aluminum insert in either the rear of the input shaft or front of the output shaft (been awhile, don't remember) that does strange things if it gets out of position.
