Default Engine rebuild in NY?

I'm looking for a reputable engine build/rebuilder in New York. Northeren New York would be best! It's for my uncles 1931 coupe. Runs but has a knock. Spun bearing? Anyone know of a great place/person? Thanks! Bob

Canton! you weren't kidding when you said northern NY. There's a guy in Albany who comes to many of the New England Meets with a few of his engines for sale. I don't have first hand experience with his product, and Albany is still quite a haul from Canton, but he's the only one I know of upstate. He has a website:

could just need a shim or two removed. This is something easy to do and anyone that knows how to use a wrench can get the job done saving thousands of dollars that can be used for gas to drive the car.

Even if it did not fix the problem you would learn a lot about the engine.

Hi Bob, There's an outfit called Bouldin's Model A Garage in Belfast, New York. Bob Bouldin is a very knowledgeable guy with a lifetime of experience in the engine rebuilding business. I have had numerous exchanges with him over the years, and I feel that you could rely upon his expertise. He has built numerous engines for the hill-climb crowd. Google him to get his contact info. Happy Motoring! Oh, around this time of year he goes out to Arizona for a month, but should be back soon if he isn't back already.

I would go to J and M Machine in Mass. www.jandm-machine.com
They have done 6 engines for me and all run great! State of the art machines and they do everything in-house and do it properly! I never want to leave there when I bring a motor down!
There not that far way from you and I would seriously give them a call.

Several members of our club have used The Babbitt Pot (www.thebabbittpot.com or 518.747.4277) in Ft. Edward somewhere near Lake George. They all liked his work. Ask for Ziggy.

My brother used them for his T. Very happy with the results.

Thanks everyone for the help! Called J and M and they are expensive. I believe in you pay for what you get but do all engine rebuilts cost around $5000? I have had a few mechanics look/listen to it and they have all said it sounds like a spun bearing...

No not all rebuilds cost that , but when you get a price over the phone site unseen , that's what you get ,

The shop must cover his butt , so he assumes that you will need everything ,

Take it to the shop and let them give you a price .

Spun bearing can mean crank and block need replaced .

bobk2011, Go Devil Garage is very good. I have also dealt with Bob Bouldin in Belfast, NY with excellent results. Bob's email (last I knew) was [email protected]. His telephones are (W) 585-365-2493 or (H) 585-268-7746. But by your location in NY, Go Devil Garage just southeast of Albany would be a lot closer.

One thing, Bob, never start with the premise that you are getting the same job at 3,000.00, that you will get for 5,000.00 from someone like J & M or others.

I can say that about 95% of the Model A engines that we rebuild were already rebuilt some time in there life and still ran for some years in the past. even at that, some of the bad machine work showes up when the New Machine work is done.

Out of the 95% of rebuilt Model A engines, about 40% of those were done with in the past year to 20 years with 100 to 5,000.00 miles on that the bad babbitt, and bad over all machine work that was done, could be seen, and pointed out.

I could write a long Post of all the ways machining should be done, and all the wrong ways it is being done on the engines that are giving up. Look at the one's that have just been posted on here time and time again.

Where ever you take your engine Bob, make sure the shop gives all kinds of detailed pictures of the work on your engine, and of their machines doing the work if it is farmed out.

There is nothing wrong with farming out the work if it is watched buy the guy in charge of your rebuild, and he knows between the good and bad. I have Vern in Fort Dodge do the machining on the Block ect., as I am to busy with babbitt, and don't have his kind of equipment, or his know how, but I do know what I should end up with, and I always check his work, and triple check mine.

The rest of these pictures are on my Albums

What Herm said, absolutely!
I have had 4 engines done by J and M both T, A and v-8's. All beautiful and top notch!
I have personally seen several engines at there shop recently that were just done by so-called top rebuilders and now they are re-doing everything again after not even 500 miles.
So, what did they really save by having to do the job twice?

I have an engine from Schwalms, they are located in PA. They do a heck of a job, I have about 25,000 miles on the engine and much of it is running at 50+ MPH on longer tours.

Too many engines get rebuilt for big bucks when many of them just need an overhaul, tighten mains and rods, surface valves and seats, balance, etc.

There are many builders out there but a handful can rebuild a Model A properly. I have enclosed some photos of the 2295.00 and 3500 dollar variety. Take your pick pay now or pay later and pay twice.
These pictures are why I posted "Questions to ask your engine rebuilder".

If you don't ask the right questions you'll end up with these examples. Cylinders bored and not honed.
No magnafluxing,no crack repairs,Glass beads left in the engine.JB weld.
Model A and T amateur hour.

All consider themselves Experts.!
All these engines have LESS than 500 miles.!
Famous saying; " I got a deal "
