any pics of 36' fuse box installs and where?

i'm at the very early stages of wiring my 36 coupe, after market 12 circuit fuse box. i'm hoping to find mounting in the upper driver side cowl side. there will be three groups of wires, 1 engine, front lights,horn, 2 dash gauges. 3 rear lights, fuel sender. it's more wires than these cars ever had, so if anyone has interesting installs, wire runs inside or out, and why, i'd love to see or hear about them. thanks, kurt.

I used a similar wiring kit and mounted it in my '35 up high against the firewall above steering column. So far it has been great.

did you use bolts through the firewall metal? mine is painted already, but it's not out of the question to drill.

The original had two mounting screws directly above the steering shaft high on the firewall. The single fuse served all the lights only. Not sure it’s wise to fuse the engine, as the heavy draw from the starter motor may blow that fuse. On wire runs, secure them against vibration, away from exhaust pipes, out of sight inside frame rails where possible, away from danger from road debris and floor jacks.

I used existing firewall thru bolts to fasten a 3/4" thick piece of plywood painted black on upper left inner cowl. I used similar 9+3 harness from Rebel. Make a thorough list of all lights, switches, etc that you plan to use then be sure to add wiring and grounds while laying out the panel and harness. Figure out where your battery will go and how you will rout the heavy gauge cables. Include actual grounding conductors to most or all areas to minimize chassis ground issues. Just my $.02. Even with that plan you'll still end up making changes and slightly lessening any super awesome neatness you wire with. My three main harness paths out are:
- a big one through the existing cowl grommet (new ones are readily available). Includes 10 ga ground and positive from battery/alternator/main fuse on the engine side.
- a few wires down the drivers kick panel area for high/low beam floor switch
- a coupe of wires through toe board for brake light switch

maybe you can post them here where anyone else can find them and see for their project too.

these are some good comments and suggestions to consider. i'm hoping more will come through. for the ground, i plan on using a bus bar under the dash.

I added a bunch of stuff to my '35 pickup including blinkers, dimmer switch, fuel pump, inertia switch, etc. etc. Needless to say, I needed an aftermarket fuse panel. I made up a piece of 1/4" plastic about 14"x6" and mounted all of this stuff on it. It mounts high up on the inside of the cowl, driver's side with a couple of clips and easy to remove wing nuts.

I left enough slack on the wiring bundles to allow me to simply unhook the entire plastic panel and set it on the floor board so I could work on it if needed.

I wasn't fond of trying to work up under a dash when I was 20. I surely am not anymore of a fan of working under a dash at 69.

In my 34 I put extra wire panel for blinkers etc behind the kick panel on the drivers side. Attached to one of the braces in there, so no holes visible once covered up with the kick panel

this here is a great idea to have the fuse box be movable for access and additions. but driver side upper cowl seems to be the spot. thats where i installed it on my 30 model A, but it was fixed. i think i will try it again the slack in the cable this time. i'm going to use again the ground bus bar again with all the allen set screws.
i think i have enough new info here to get started laying it out, if anyone wants to add their ideas, please do. it could help someone down the line with their project. if i end up with anything worth a pic, i'll post them.

On my '40 I did what PGBuick did on his car. I used two stock holes that are between the wiper mount left hand hole and the oval large hole for the stock harness to mount the new harness. I used 3/4 plywood and drilled the holes to fit the firewall and for the harness mounts. I put 1/4 -20 "T" nuts in the wood for the firewall mount and used button head allen bolts to secure it. I use longer button heads to secure the panel to the plywood. I also covered the plywood with black vinyl which blends in with the firewall cover.

I mounted a homemade bakelite breaker/fuse/ballast panel inside the firewall using the stock holes.

looks like phenolic. i have some 1/8 inch pieces around somewhere. great stuff.

Yes, that's the right name for the material, I keep thinking of it as bakelite.

I used a 1/4" thick piece so I could countersink the screws so the back was flat against the firewall.

i bought mine from a army surplus store back when they all kinds of interesting things in them to make some high power pro-audio passive crossovers for some stage monitors i built for a guy. it was so cheap i took some extra panels just to have for projects. 12"x18" maybe. you hardly see those places anymore here in so-cal.

Hate to be a stick in the mud, but a 36 does not have a "FUSE BOX" and it should be 6V.
