Ethanol-free gas
There may be hope yet. There was an editorial in today's NYT by Robert Bryce calling for the end to ethanol, and there are at least two bills being proposed.
You can do a search on the NYT site, or if you have an account, you can read it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/10/op...l-rip-off.html Last edited by 700rpm; 03-10-2015 at 11:35 PM. |

Re: Ethanol-free gas
Corn is for people, cows, chickens, and pigs --not for our gas tanks!! As the world's #1 oil producer, there is no need. I love farmers but ethanol is #1 reason for food prices to be so high!

Re: Ethanol-free gas
Ethanol is primarily produced in the US through corn stock. As everyone knows, corn is a "heavy feeder" and given no other fertilization, will soon deplete the land. Of course farmers growing corn for ethanol fertilize - and almost all of this fertilizer comes from - you guessed it - petro-stocks.
So the net effect of ethanol infused gasoline is actually to INCREASE our petroleum use due to the energy inefficiencies of growing corn. The only advantage to corn in gasoline is use as an "oxygenator" which aids combustion - but this can be accomplished with as little as 3 percent admixture - not the 20 percent that your EPA advocates. And is a cleaner and less environmentally damaging additive than tetra-ethyl lead or MBTE Joe K

Re: Ethanol-free gas
I'm afraid the most egregious advantage to corn in gasoline is to the farmers and the ethanol lobby. It's the old "I got mine, screw you." way of thinking.

Re: Ethanol-free gas
I saw an article in Hemmings about this. I hope it succeeds.

Re: Ethanol-free gas
For alcohol free gasoline in Alaska, just go to your nearest corner gas station.

Re: Ethanol-free gas
Ethanol in our gasoline is a Government perk to USA farmers. Farmers raise more corn than is necessary, so forget about it going coming out of our gasoline anytime soon.

Re: Ethanol-free gas
I ONLY put ethanol-free fuel in my A. It costs $.50 more per gallon than 87 octane 10% ethanol, and is the same price as #2 diesel. I really hope the ethanol tax is repealed. That crap wrecked multiple carburetors in multiple vehicles. It even melted the carburetor on my Briggs & Stratton lawnmower because the carb is plastic. If ethanol disappeared, I would have many more options for filling up. Right now, there is one gas station 5 mi from my house that sells ethanol-free.

Of course, 10% ethanol is also available at 4 cents a litre less than 91 octane but after doing the sums, I choose not to use it because it contains less energy per dollar than "proper fuel".

Re: Ethanol-free gas
A HUGE ethanol plant, here in our San Joaquin Valley, went belly up! Apparently our farmers didn't want to stray away from mainly FOOD crops.
Google San Joaquin Valley Ca. crop varieties, we grow the widest variety of crops of ANYWHERE in the WORLD, along with our coastal valleys, which grow mostly veggies & cool weather crops. HUGE plants here, process more tomato products than you could IMAGINE!!! Bill W.

Re: Ethanol-free gas
Let's not forget the NUTS (of all varieties) and Olives ! And California RICE is world famous and is the largest grower in the U.S.
I LOVE my 'corn on the cob', and with ethanol stealing away the corn for fuel, the cost of corn (for eating) has sky rocketed ! |

Re: Ethanol-free gas
Watch the cost go higher....remember, lead was an additive and when they removed it it cost us more . Ethanol is an additive that has cost us more and when they remove it will cost us even more!
Hat to be a killjoy ....but I am a realist.m
