Old Henry's first start gets one million views
A major milestone! The video of the first start of Old Henry's engine after it had sat for 31 years 8 years ago has just gone over one million views on YouTube. Here it is for any that missed it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY389S_KUjs

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
Very good. I added another "like". That procedure is so familiar to me, trouble shooting and preparing an old flathead (or ohv) for start up after a long rest. I've done it on my 39 and now hope to do the same on the 52 Merc. Not today though. Its -20F here this morning

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
i`m glad it worked out for him, however i would STRONGLY caution everyone to not use an open container of gasoline to prime a carburetor on a running engine. forty years ago while in Viet Nam i was doing the same thing, the engine back fired thru the carb, lit the container of gas on fire. you have no idea how fast things change when YOU and your surroundings are on fire! please don`t do it.

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
I had some YouTube advertising company contact me early on when I was getting a lot of views to arrange for me to show ads on my video for money. I hate ads on videos enough that I didn't want to mess mine up with them so I didn't. Maybe missed out on some good advertising money. I could still do it but won't. I'll leave it pristine and pure for viewing pleasure.

And yes, I sort of cringed when watching you pouring gas into the carb as the engine was cranking. I've had some backfires through carburetors that could have set that container in your hands on fire. I just pour a shot of gas in and then go try the starter. But I'm sure you have heard enough about that already.

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
It's funny to keep getting criticisms about feeding gas into the carburetor until the fuel pump pumped it up from the gas tank. (A squirt then attempt would not work in those circumstances. I would have to be a continuous source.) I was present when the engine was just completed and ready to start on the engine stand at the last garage that rebuilt it. The mechanic tried a squirt then try a few times that didn't work so the other mechanic did exactly what I did until the pump filled the carb and it would go on its own.
Yes. I've heard enough about it. I even put a notice of such right at that spot in the video but it's still the number one comment. Funny how people just can not resist pointing out the obvious.

Never mind the fact that you were not wearing safety glasses to keep the loose dirt / rust out of your eyes when the windmill started turning. > LOL <

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
All that dirt blowing out of the radiator was a pretty big surprise. That's why I jumped back and didn't get the choke shut off.

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
Several years ago, a guy that I worked with was pouring gasoline into a carburetor while his wife was cranking the engine. Like some others that won't take this seriously, POOF! He was gone from work for eons. Hands, arms, chest, face, neck......disaster! Ruined his life. Don't do something dumb! DD

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
"It's alive" love it!
Proud to be one of those 1 million from years ago. Don't let them give you heck! I drove around for a while in my Neighborhood with a plastic 1 gal gas jug strapped to the fire wall while I was installing a new gas line and 6v gas pump. My neighbor would say...you really shouldn't do that! Probably shouldn't have with the hot exhaust manifold right under it =( Randy Last edited by Rand; 11-26-2014 at 04:02 PM. |

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
It's good no one else has ever done as dumb of things as I've done.
Glad I've done them though. Many of them were just plain fun and no harm came of them.

I don't believe anyone is upset. Quite the contrary, it's great when those who are aware and open-minded can benefit and gain a little wisdom from others' ill-advised past experiences. DD

Re: Old Henry's first start gets one million views
Never start an old engine ,it could blow up and you could get hurt. Never drive an old car, you could have a wreck and get hurt. Never walk out your door ,you could have a tree fall on you and you'd get hurt. Never get out of bed , you might fall and get hurt. Now that that's over with ,Great video, I love seeing a Flathead coming back to life. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Your alive and Old Henry is running.
