How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
Howdy Folks, My 3.78:1 ring and pinion are junk.
Last trick is removing Pinion bearing race from carrier. I've read all about it, but lack the correct K.R.W tools. Suggestions, what will get it done well ( without breaking anything !!! ) I'm just a bit hydraulic press gun shy now Tigger |

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
Howdy Ken, I see a curved heal plate with a section of pipe welded to it.
a large threaded rod with nipple on tip, being jacked out by a big nut... Cleaver tool for boing so simple and "home-shop-mad-able" Thank you! Now I only wish we lived a little closer so I could come by your place to do it in ten minutes time, and then have coffee looking at your other cool stuff ~Tigger~ |

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
Ken, I really like that tool, If a guy had a little bottle jack it would probably work. I have drilled a hole in the back of the case and with a long rod drove them out, There not usually in very tight, a little heat around the front of the case makes it easier, then I tap the hole I made with a 1/2 pipe tap and put a plug in it. The farmer way. Walt

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
If you have a hydraulic press with a decent bed rail width, it's an easy operation but a jack/screw tool is a good alternative for those that don't.

I've tried several small hydraulic jacks and none fit in the housing.

This is what I made to remove the old double race when I put 3:54's in my roadster. I saw it on the inter web and made one. It works well, and nothing got broken.

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
Weld a bead around the race on the inside, if its a double race do it on both and it will fall out when it cools. Let me know how you make out

Gentlemen and roughs alike, I am reminded at this very moment of a pleasant idea.
In the immortalized words of Scrooge's Tiny Tim as the steaming hot X-Mass bird lay upon the family table and hands held in quiet reverence for the gift's before them... " Bless Us Every One " and pass the can of PB blaster "Wiesel Piss" to most of us..." Cheers to all the cat skinners in this motley crew of knuckle busters out in the cold. ~"TIGGEER"~ |

I just ended up taking it to a local diff place I knew of. Explained what to do.
Don't run taps through the treads either.

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
The pinion, races, and bearings are installed in the case by heating the case, then driving the assembly into place. Removal is done the same way.

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
Walter, May I come up and have a shop visit with you before we bring up my motor...
and gently warm up to a light smoking, use your bench vise, and tap / press away. It turns out the Banjo is already set up for your farmers tried and true methods... I enjoyed your early morning call last week, so state your favorite morning eat treat. ~"T"~ |

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
Am I missing something here?
How can you weld around the inside of the pinion bearing double race. When I have taken these apart, if I remember right; the pinion, both bearings, and the double race came out of the housing in one piece. |

Re: How best to remove pinoin bearing race ?
The front bearing should slide off the pinion spline once the two nuts and washers are removed. This would allow welding of the race close to its middle. However, I can remove that pinion and bearing assembly very quickly either using a tool I made or on my hydraulic press. Some of the rears I dismantle have good bearings that I may reuse so my feeling is why mess them up.
