Usually the lower the number, the cooler the plug. However NGK plugs are just the
opposite, the higher the number, the cooler the plug.

[QUOTE=itstom;436752]Also, as far as indexing the plugs, which way should the gap be facing?
QUOTE]

When I indexed mine I was told on #1 and #3 the gap or end of ground points to 1-2 o'clock #2 and #4 point to 10-11 o'clock, is this correct, don't know but runs good this way. Would be interested to hear if anyone index theirs to a different orientation .....

Got the extra distributor done today for Tom. Went thru the unit, bent the springs as far inward ( tighter ) as they would go, installed a new leather brake unit, new contacts , adjusted dwell on both sets on the dist machine and ran it for quite a while wearing everything in.
Also used a model 68 advance unit ( lowest offered for the helmet unit) the 68s are 8.5 degree units while the 40As are 12 .5 degrees .
This distributor runs 10 degrees at 3000 rpm ( as sent it ran 10 degres at 2400 rpm).
I guess we will see what it does on the engine, can lower the base (side screw) timing a bit ( maybe 6 degrees) and the new brake is adjusted ( for now) at all the way out with new leather .

Jeez Bubba, I just sent it out Saturday. I figured I'd have a couple days of down time so I pulled some rotten wiring harness out. I guess I better not waste time getting the new one in.

Can't wait to try the new dizzy!

One thing about the L-100 cam, it will reduce static compression by over 1 point.

I have to correct this the l-100 will reduce the static CR from 8.5 to 6.75 no wonder it runs so good at low speed. Google "Dynamic cR" fil in the blanks

Wow. Thanks Ol' Ron. I never thought about that. I was nervous when I put the heads on because the motor had always cranked kind of slow (6v). I replaced cables and cleaned connections and was pleasantly surprised the first time I turned it over.

It never occurred to me that the cam was lowering the CR from what I had calculated.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

Neither the L-100 nor any other cam will lower the static CR. What Ron means is the DYNAMIC CR will be reduced as a result of the valve timing.(late closing valve) For an explanation of how this works, read my book.
