Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
Good day to everyone. Approximately 500 miles ago I installed new rear drums, bearings, seals, shoes and brake hardware. I packed the bearings with Pennzoil Premium Red Wheel Grease. Today I performed an inspection and found the grease is a caked up, silver gray mess (looks like "Never-Seez"). Also, I pulled the seal on the left drum hub, took out the bearing, and found it has unusual wear. The bottom ring of the bearing shows wear as if the ring was spinning and scraped the inside of the hub, several of the rollers seemed to have worn into the ring of the bearing. At the time I installed the new parts I did notice that the tapered spindle was a bit nasty looking when I installed the new drums, but the key fit snug, so I torqued the axle nut and I thought things seemed fine. They did not rub against the backing plates, and I didn't detect much play. What am I missing here? Please see the attached photos. I also noticed what I'm hoping is a scratch and not a crack to the back right of the key way.

There was a huge batch of defective rear wheel bearings being sold from what I was told by a specific vendor... Some people actually lost their wheel....I heard this about 2-3 years ago

Did you drive the seal in until it bottomed out?

Clean up the parts in a can of solvent and put a magnet in the soup to see if it is metallic and then show us some of the cleaned surfaces for better opinions.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
Check your axle end play (in-out). It should be 0.015"-0.020". You should have both ends of the diff up on very sturdy jack stands. Remove the other side hub so that both axles are free. Check both sides. It takes quite a bit of in-out force (100lbs?) to move the assembly to the play limits with the diff in place. Be VERY careful not to push/pull the car over on the stands. If you have a lot of play then the spider assembly is worn and you are likely grinding the hubs against the axle ends on turns. Adding axle shims would move the hubs out, but that is a band-aid to fix the symptom, not a real fix of the problem.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
Just went through this 2 weeks ago, new hubs and bearings last summer about 1000 miles since. What i found was that some not all of the bearing end pins would stick out past the cage and were grinding into the inside face of the new hubs. I also had bearings that looked like they were packed in neverseize. I was able to find new original bearings and this fixed the problem. When measured the hub and axle housing bearing surfaces where fine and suffered no ill effects. Glad i pulled the wheels.

from which vendor did you get the bearings?
Not all vendors have the same quality can we get a better view of the race on the axle itself? You have a washer or something on there in the way

I had the same thing happen about 2 years ago. The new bearings were junk. Not hardened it would seem. I cleaned up everything and installed a good set of old ORIGINAL bearings, and all is well.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
I too suffered from the defective roller bearings, but my car sustained more damage.
The roller bearing broke apart inside the hub, cracked the hub, and destroyed the bearing race, requiring me to remove the rear axle housing and having a machine shop turn down the race and compression-fit a new sleeve from Bratton's. This cost me a lot of time, frustration, and money. |

1. Photo #2 looks like the needle cage holes are worn out oblong shaped already.
2, What caused that groove worn in the cage? 3. PHOTO #3 looks like rollers have worn the upper cage plate about 60% where the rollers contact the cage plate. 4. Sure would be nice to know where these came from. Quote:

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
I took the other drum off and the cause of the problem became clearer. The roller bearings are defective. This particular bearing fell apart as you see in the photo. Look at the wear on the end plates. Also, the inside face of the new hub has been damaged as well. At the very least, I seem to need new hubs, bearings, and seals. I will investigate further tomorrow. Thanks for all the responses. I see that others have had this problem as well. These new defective, inferior parts can be a nightmare for our hobby.

Until we know who is selling these "inferior" parts, others will also have the same problem.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
I must be the exception to post #16. I don't have a clue where he bought them. Sure would like to know though so I don't buy into the same problem. Until better informed I will stick with old used wheel bearings that I have cleaned and hand packed with grease.

Re: Rear Wheel Bearing Grease Silver Gray. Is this Rear End Shot?
The original bearings were Hyatt bearings, in which the rollers are each made by rolling flat stock to form each roller, with the ends cut squarely. The replacements were solid rollers with a helix cut in them to look like the originals. Aside from the lack of hardening, I think the originals hold grease better than the replacements.
