Default Mobil 1 best for cold starts.

An interesting demonstration of the differences in flow rate of Mobil 1, Amzoil, Royal Purple, and Walmart oils at -40° C: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ_vxdO_9nc It shows the very clear difference between viscosity and flow rate. All 4 oils have the same viscosity, 5W-30, but grossly different flow rates. Glad I switched to Mobil 1 after my last rebuild.

Hoe many of us drive our cars at -40F?
Interesting but not very conclusive.

Been using Mobil 1 since before it was available in some of the viscosity ratings that it is today.
Although it is an interesting exercise I would rather have seen the same thing done using real world (except maybe the far north) temperatures rather than -40°.

Here is a chart someone posted on the forum. Mobil one is pretty good with Zinc in some grades. Probably all have enough for our cars.

Mobil 1 is not recommended for a newly rebuilt engine because its lubrication properties will prevent the rings from properly seating. After a normal break-in is the time to change to Mobil 1.

During the eighties I worked at a full service Mobil. I picked up the Mobil 1 habit.

On occasion my wallet would insist on a cheaper choice. (my other specialization being contract delivery work-meaning lots of miles driven and frequent backyard oil changes) However, I was blessed with exceptional hearing. So on cold winter mornings that initial burst of life told me that I had best run Mobil 1 if I expected to have the equipment last.

That said I that I expect if I ever get my AV8 running I'll be using Mobil 1. All I have read recently, about zinc and diesel oils, indicates that our spring pressures are fine with the amount of zinc plus other additives that are in today's oils.

BTW My Mrs. prefers I not run it in my avatar. When the trans bands get hot, the car smells like onions (And I don't mean Vidalia).

I use it in my V-12, Mobil 1 15-50, it seems to really like it, no burning issue..I change it once a year..or so..run good hastings filter..seems to help my occasionally lifter rattle..I have not added any zinc or lead or marvel..runs great, loves hi-way with columbia engaged..

I don't think the valve spring pressure of our engines have to worry about zinc. I only run 50 lbs on an L-100 and have no troble turning 5K. I plan on using Moble one at my next oil change as by then I figger it has enough brake in mikes. At present I'm runing 5-20, but may go to 5-30 this summer. I;m glad to see Ol Henry running a synthetic oil

What I am seeing (reading on line) is that zinc is in this new wave of starburst oils ( including Mobil 1 ) . Just not as much as was needed for high lift OHVs of the '60s. More like what was needed for engines of the '50s. So... we are good to go.

Speak for yourself! Alot of us up here run our everyday drivers at 40 below! And yes, Mobil1 is a great oil for that.
Now I would never run any of my ol flatheads at those temps!
Even with great oil, those temps shorten the life of an engine quite a bit. Just from experience, I would say by 40% of normal engine life.

Another advantage of Mobil 1 is that it is a designer chemical. Conventional lube oil is for the most part whatever was in the crude. You make lube oil by taking out what isn't lube. The purity of Mobil 1 is why it is so good at -40F. With conventional lube oils it is difficult to get all the waxes out that cause oil to gel at low temperatures.

Amen. We don't hit 40 below here but I drove in 1° on a road trip in November and often start on cold mornings on road trips in the winter below 10°. (Car is kept in insulated garage at home so no problem there.)

John
In looking at this chart I see that Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 oil has 1750PPM of Zinc. This is their motor cycle oil and it says "Advanced full synthetic formula designed specifically for motor cycles where clutch lubrication is also important." Makes me wonder if this would be a good oil to use in our Flatheads....

At -40 you can start your car,, let it warm up for 30 min, then when you put it in gear(automatic), you push on the gas and it doesn't move. Switch from reverse to drive a couple times at Rpms your sure will destroy your clutches, and finally it moves. You get out to the street and as you build up speed you realize your driving on four flat tires , because the rubber still holds the shape of sitting still. After about 5 miles they warm up enough to become round again.
Of course you don't go too fast because with the ice fog you can't see more than a hundred feet in front of you.

This is the exact same thing I experienced with a '63 Riviera I once owned and additionally, the vinyl bucket seat cracked/shattered when I sat down....It was -37 below at the time....

Funny thing is that they are both exactly the same temperature. I checked because I had the same question.
