Default Engine Hesitation

Hello Everyone,

I had my '51 victoria running great but something always comes up! Ever since two weeks ago: when the engine is still cold there is a hesitation when you accelerate. Once the engine is warmed up it sort of dissipates; and when you ease onto the accelerator pedal there is no hesitation. What could this be? A bad accelerator pump maybe?

Thanks!
JLford

Could be,also could be the link from the pump rod to the throttle connection, could have a sloppy hole at the throttle. Almost could be anything.Best way is a tear down and inspect. Pays to know what to look for. ken ct OMO.

Sticky valves?? Drizzle some MMO down the carb while running and the rest of the bottle in the gas tank. G.M.

GM's suggestion is spot on, add some Seafoam to the gas tank, takes care of moisture in the gas tank, and other el crapola along the way.
Also, check your air cleaner. Does it bog / hesitate with the air cleaner on?
Stock air cleaner? Might be time to wash out the element.

the problem went away for a period of time when i got lazy and didn't put in any lead additive in, could the lead additive be the problem? has anyone ever had that happen?

check the accelerator pump, engine require more fuel when cold, set the accelerator pump linkage to a highr hole so it squitrs more fuel in carb when pushing on pedal

On all of my old Fords if I don't put MMO in the fuel after two fill ups the valves will slightly stick without it. One method to check if this works or doesn't work is to drop down to 10 MPH in high gear and slowly step on the gas. SLIGHTLY sticky valve will be indicated by a slight stumbling of the engine. Drizzle a little MMO down both sides of the carb while the engine is running and put a 1/2 quart in the fuel tank. Drive about 10 miles and repeat the test. Also if you have dual exhaust, at idle the sound will be boom, boom, bip boom, boom, bip. After the 10 mile run the duals will be a steady boom, boom, boom with no bips. In the 10 MPH test it will pull right out with no stumbling after the treatmnt. I have seen this a dozens of times and the MMO cured the problem. I have MMO injectors on most of my drivers. The MMO in the fuel tank is a better method if you do it with every tank fuel a 1/2 pint should do the trick. In the tank the MMO cleans, tank, lines, pump, carb, valves and rings. Only the valves and rings get treated with the injector. I use the injectors because I have 2 locations and 8 or more old Fords I drive and don't remember if I put it in the tank or not. With the injector I see what's in the bottle. I use MMO in my turbo diesels also. I put it in my wifes Mercedes a few years ago and it only take a few miles to accually feel the differance in power. My wife drove the car and asked what I did to her car it spins the wheels when she starts out. This is an easy $6.00 fix before tearing things apart. G.M.

G.M. gotta believe in the MMO. Have been using that product in all my small engines fuel. Faithfully used it on my homelite xl chainsaw, 34 years later it's still on the job and running sweet
