Ford 1938 pick up steering box & front axle interchange.
what appears to be A 3/4 ton 38 v8 truck chassis [long parallel 6" deep frame ] has been offered to me & pics were supplied. it has i beam, cross spring, radius rods-A frame , steering box etc.
my question is : Does the 1938, 3/4 ton truck steering box interchange with the 1/2 ton pickup frame? IF the S/box casing & mounting plate appear to be the same will they fit the pass car & 1/2 ton p/u frame? another question is : are the 3/4 ton I beam axle , cross spring & wishbone ,the same in dimentions as pass car & p/u original items. in photos I can see the back plates- brakes & drums are definatlly slightly bigger & the Rims look to be 17" & 5 lug x 6" centres with a split ring saftey band on the rim, Last edited by Rascal; 01-14-2012 at 05:36 AM. Reason: to further clarify my question. |

If it has 17" split rims, then it's a Tonner. 3/4 ton trucks used 16" wide 5 wheels.

thanks for the response.
you will see, i have re-phrased my question a little but am still a little baffled as the frame has wishbone front end with cross spring & what appears to be pass car - p/u I beam . did only the 3/4 tonners have these? i was certain that one tonners had 1/2 elliptic springs all round |

FYI, 3/4 tons didn't come out until 39. It sounds like this one has a tonner rear end, as 3/4 tons had 16" 36-39 type wheels all the way around.
As far as I know, the front end is all the same as passenger and 1/2 ton. My brother has a 39 3/4 ton...I'll ask him to make sure...or maybe he will chime in. Neal |

yes, this has tonner rear axle housing [not banjo] is 1/2 elliptic -parrallel leaf springs & has radius rods about 12" out from brake back plates, these are clamped around the housing. everything looks original and not fabricated on, so i assume its factory. The steering box query is my main concern , but id on the other items is always very helpfull. cheers . Russ. |
