Thanks to all who have given advice and opinion. Just THINKING about doing a conversion and needed more info on how it is done, cost of parts and if there are any skilled professional shops in my area that could assist. All very good arguments on both sides, pro and con (scopic and phobic). It's MY car and MY money and ultimately MY choice! Thanks again, it is very enlightening!

So true, never listen too, or pay mind of naysayers, including myself.
Just remember that there is a lot of "humor" in the Barn, and it must be taken as such.

As my wife would say "I don't know what you are talking about!"

I was just explaining what the con's of juice brakes are on older iron .,

Call a museum and ask the car man about brake fluid ,., I will suggest and this might not apply to you or it may ., Fix your mechanical brakes and
take it easy ,., slow down ,. quit trying to keep up with modern cars ,.,

Jack rabbit starts and stopping on a dime are ok in your modern stuff .,

If you modify for speed and need modern brakes then you defeat the purpose
of the car in the first place .,.

.,

Actually it is hygroscopic.

I converted to hydraulic because of two things, cost and I can do it myself. There isn't a brake shop near me that can radius brake shoes to drums for instance. Between Les Andrews books and Internet searches my conversion was relatively easy. I've got about $2200 in the job including new cast iron drums in the rear and serviceable cast iron in the front. Also have a 7" single diaphragm booster on the master cylinder. I'm using DOT 5 synthetic fluid. Not saying a good mechanical system won't work nearly as well just not practical for me.

The correct word is actually "hygroscopic".

Amen to that brother.

The restorer in me doesn't like them but the constituinalist in me recognizes the individual freedom of each American to do as they see fit without my approval, it is his car.

If it makes you happy paint the car plum crazy purple with lime green wheels and the biggest white walls you can find.

The very reason why I leave my hood closed at car shows.

If someone really wants to see what's under the hood, I'll open it for them, otherwise it stays closed. Although it still has the "stock-looking" Model A engine, there's just too much stuff under there to generate unwanted negative comments. (including the plastic fan).

(Oh, the plastic fan came about after the 4-bladed "truck" fan that was on it when I bought it, took out my otherwise perfect radiator.)

I like my Mechanicals, they work great, but if I didn't have the power in the legs I would switch. The reason for the power in the legs is because my A is fast.

I made the switch to hydraulics. My mechanicals were worn out and I had the rebuilt set of hydraulics already sitting on the shelf. I will say they are much easier to adjust and there's no concern for making sure all the linkage is adjusted right since there's no linkage to adjust. My car just sat for 6 month and I charged the battery and took it out of the garage- still stops the same. Nothing rusted or leaked. I don't regret the change at all. It's a softer peddle with more stoping results.

I would expect that it would be a harder pedal, any chance you have air in the lines.

Softer was probably not the best choice of wording. I just don't have to press down as far for the reaction I want. I never have to press it to the floor like I sometimes would with my mechanicals.

Now Bill, this is called "humor", come on now, say it with me..."humor" not "ragging"
Please take it as it's intended.

Now, that was funny.

I haven't seen the test pattern since about 1960 when TV went off the air at 11 PM and came on about 7 AM.

See Tom, we're not old, we just have a boat load of memories.

The test pattern let us know when it was time for bed.

For you young'ns out there, TV broadcast from from 7am - 11pm, on three channels, maybe four if you lived in the big city and they had PBS fired up.
UHF didn't come along until years later, and it was a big deal, we had FIVE whole station then, one of the UHF station ran 24 hours on Friday and
Saturnday...WOW

I read this twice and I missed the ragen. I saw some good opinions to someone who has very few posts. I wish I would of known more when I first started before I did highly recommended medications to my truck. I believe we all need to create our own philosiphy (and mine is the best!!!) I defiantly have my ways and on this fourm I like to share them. LOL (laugh out load or lots of love they both work for me on this post...)
