Re: Remember when
Several decades ago, I worked at an engineering company in Houston Texas and on our team was a guy about my same age who's last name was Nowak. He noticed I drove to work everyday in my '55 Ford sedan and he told me about his uncle who lived up near St. Louis who raced a 1956 Ford funny car at all the race-tracks around there.
I didn't believe him. About 15 years later, I was building my '55 Courier sedan delivery car and was looking for parts to put it together. A local guy told me to go out to Washington Missouri and find a guy who had some cars like my sedan. So I go out there and I see a '56 Ford Crown Vic funny car sitting next to his garage. It turns out the guy's name was Dale Nowak. He also had another stock '56 Vicky 2-dr hardtop sitting in a field near his house and lots of parts in his shed. He told me about two salvage yards nearby that had stuff I needed. Had it not been for running across him, I might not ever have finished my Courier with original parts. I got some stuff from him and visited both salvage yards and got stuff from them that I needed. it completely blew my mind that the guy in Houston wasn't blowing smoke afterall. Later that year I went out to a raceway in Missouri and watched Dale run his Crown Vic down the track. |

Re: Remember when
The paint job on the car in the first post is absolutely fantastic. I cannot even imagine how many hours were invested in the end result.

Have ya noticed most of your modern cars today roll out of the factory in some shade of metallic gold, bronze or aluminum? And they are all clear-coated. Very drab looking. But many of the colors of yesteryear in solid shades of blue, green, red, tan and even black would really pop on that car if they were clear-coated also. |

Re: Remember when
Here's a 3 minuet video of the Worlds Fastest Maveric.
It's a ProMod car with about 4,000 HP. It gets a little out of shape on the first run, But generally runs pretty straight and strong... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1ur5QRdWTs .

Re: Remember when
I don't know if PHOTO #2 is an actual strip or show car.
I do know one thing. If it launched sideways, there would be a lot of crying going on ... |

Re: Remember when
Agreed, my 36 build started in 76 and drove first in 80 was 100% junk yard parts. Even today the only "after market" parts are the front disc brakes and the steering wheel. Every part and piece in the car came out of a junk yard. Guess the ol factory stuff was pretty good, it has just over 140K miles on it now.

Yes, it is actually a strip car. And there was probably some crying when it dropped the drive shaft in this photo.

Hi KULTULZ, Just a note to say that junkyard parts would not live long with the HP it takes to dragrace in todays world It helps if one is pretty well off, to build one of these money pits today. Plus, The companies that make the high performance parts will pay Sponcor-ship money to the racers running in National events. ============================================ An older friend of mine once told me,,, There is One Way that you could possibly End Up with a Small Fortune after your done racing, and that is: START OUT WITH A LARGE FORTUNE . .

Re: Remember When
I just never understood beating a car to death I guess ...
FACTORY RACING yes ... I thought these were required - You would be surprised what you can come across in today's HI-PO in a salvage yard or FleaPay. Just like the sixties, you have to know what you are looking for. I'm into ECO-BOOMS NOW.

Suppose your front yoke pulled out of the trans tail shaft just as you stomped on it. For a split second the driveshaft would be flailing wildy, knocking against undercarriage and all. I was out at Mid-America Raceway in the late '90's and a pair lined up for a grudge race. One of the cars was a '55 Ford Mainline 4-dr sedan. Soon as the light turned green, he stomps on it and twists off all 4 bolts holding the rear U-joint to the rear-end yoke. BLAM. He didn't get 5 feet from the start line. |
