? took the tank out yesterday, 10 mins into parade my flatly started back firing big time , (new points new rotor, new condenser, plugs wires all new, it gets great fuel and temp was 160. do you think its timing, cuz at end of parade NO more backfiring but I had no power, in 1st 2nd barely in 3rd. Oh and when I start her up as soon as push the start button it backfires.

Wires crossed? Dirt or water in gas?

Check under the distributor cap for moisture, arcing, etc. Good luck.

no dirt in or water in gas , gas goes thru 3 filters to carb, reason for that i take the bren carrier(tank) thru tanks trails , going to look for arching
today , if i find arching wot would be the cause moisture? thanks lads

also wires not crossed because at idle , the engine runs so smooth but under a loAD backfires then no power,. generator charges 6 volt battery perfectly

I am surprised nobody mentioned the coil... It causes all kind of crazy things when it breaks down, usually after the engine is hot.

Mine ran perfect at idle, blew the muffler apart on acceleration. Only (4) plug wires were in the correct locations!

Yup the guy had the early war Panther in his basement Germ Gov new it was there now its all going to a museum thank God , thanks fore sharing CC33
