Door Insulation

I have a 40 Ford and I am in search of the insulation paper that goes between the door and inside panel I am not sure if the new aluminum type will work

If the door skin is bare without the tar coating I use DynaMat. There's lots of other choices. I've used it in at least a dozen cars.

Hushmat is another option, equivalent to Dynamat. A little cheaper and no logos printed on it.

I don’t think old fords ever had a moder style paper , what other posts have referred to is the tar on the inside of the door . Between the door outside skin and the door frame. The old fords I’ve owned , had a round large smear of black tar like stuff on the inside of the door skin . When this has been removed or just gone , many have used the products listed by the other posts .
If you feel the need to have a moisture barrier , we used plastic sheeting and or tar paper at the old shop I worked at . South Florida after all , lots of moisture and rain .

Gop to Home Depot and buy a gallon of roofing cement and a pair of rubber gloves and get with it. Works for me.

A trowel is hard to maneuver inside the door, that's why I just use rubber gloves. It's messy, but easier. Just scoop up a handful and spread it in there.

The problem with roofing cement/tar is it has a strong chemical smell that can be a problem inside of a closed vehicle, especially when the heat raises.
The self sticking foil faced Dynamat and/or RoadKil works great inside of doors, quarter panels, floor pans etc. I have used it on several vehicles. RoadKil is a little cheaper than Dynamat, however its the same material. Make sure you use a small roller to press it onto the backing panel. On doors I fit the sheet to the inside of the door panel, loosen two upper corners of the wax paper backing, slowly peal the paper down as you roll the material onto the door.

Patience is your best friend with this project.

No appreciable smell once it dries. My wife has a nose like a bloodhound, and it never affected her.

Cutting the foil to fit, working it around in the door panels, getting it to lay flat and stick where you want it is one big PITA.

peel and seal (at lowes and other outlets, do a googl search) works good and is way cheaper than the above mentioned products

I have been using a 3M product, 3M-08840, sound deadening mats that come 19''x19" that come ten to a box for $75, and are self adhesive. One would fit inside a door easily and if you do the math cost's about $7.50 a door. I recently used them in a Model A and when you shut the door it sounds like a modern car, no more "tinny" sound and no tar smell.

I did a bit of comparison shopping on Amazon and have summarized the information in the attached table. All looked to be very similar with foil facing on one side and an adhesive on the other. All are closed cell foam or a butyl rubber. Just my two cents.
