Default Different models of 1930 Fordor Sedans

I'm Confused. Doesn't take much.

I have been looking at pictures of 1930 Model A Fordor Sedans today and from what I understand a 170 is a Deluxe Fordor and a 155 is a Town Sedan. And the 170 is referred to as a two window and the Town Sedan referred to as a three window. Am I close so far?

Now the confusion. My registration states under model; 170. But as you can see from the photo it clearly has three windows??

Sooo? What do you think? Registration messed up? Engine Numbers? Body changed in the last 84 years?

Just want to know what to call it, Deluxe or Town Sedan?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I believe that the delux is what we would call a 'blindback' where the quarter window is missing (hence the two window). Whereas the TownSedan has three windows hence the name. I think someone goofed when they registered the car years ago.

My guess is someone saw the cowl lights and thought it was a "Deluxe" years ago. Nice car. Bob

Your Fordor is a Briggs built car as defined by the straight upper edge of both door windows. If the car has a fold down arm rest in the center of the rear seat and a dome light over the back window, it is defined as a 155D Town Sedan. Of course, the TS also had cowl lights. There should also be a pin stripe on both sides of the rear face of the fuel tank on either side of the dash, the garnish moldings should be wood grained, and both front and rear floors should have a light brown carpet.

Thanks Guys for helping the Newbie. Yes it has all the above except the pin stripping on the fuel tank (possible repaint).

So what I have is a 155D Town Sedan that the DMV thinks is a Deluxe...

Works for me, thanks for straightening that out.

With all the confusion over exactly what you have, I think the best course of action would be to just send it to me. Then you can quit fretting about it.

It looks like a nice one. I miss the august 1930 Briggs town sedan that I had.

You should buy Henry's Lady. Then you'll have pictures and described differences of all the models throughout production!

I don't think you received a reply specific to your question. Yes, everything shown indicates you have a 155-D as you suspected. As far as the CA DMV goes, they have no clue and DID NOT choose that identification for your title. It's most likely that a previous owner chose that when creating a NEW title for a car that was not on the books.

Chuck, Haha, that's what brought up my question in the first place, looking at pictures. I going "wait a minute, the book says this and my registration says???"

I do have 'Henry's Lady', but today I was reading 'Ford Model A, Collector's Originality Guide' that got me to thinking.

You'll notice that in 'Henry's Lady' it kind of skips over the 1930 models in the sedan section, going from1929 on page 218 to 1931 on page 219.

Marco that makes sense and your probably correct. But I'm not going to be the one to clue them in. I just wanted to know what I had so I could answer correctly when asked about the car and not look clueless myself, haha.

Thanks again for everyone help. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Y-Blockhead,
Nice town sedan!! It looks remarkably like mine. We have a group of model A'ers in town who get together once a month for breakfast and last month we were discussing cars and titles. One of our guys has a title with one to many digits and one has one too few. The consences was that trying to correct titles only opens a "can of worms." The state doesn't know what we have nor do they care.

It's registered. I wouldn't worry about what the reg says. You now know what model it is and if you decide to sell you're "golden". JMO
By the way, it is sweet looking.

When I had my title transferred the previous one listed the model as a "Roadster" which it is. The new title lists it as a "two door" (why bother to read the paperwork when you have a picture with the application).

So long as I was issued my license plate I wasn't going to make waves with the DMV.
