Want to buy a rebuildable engine for my 1935 Ford pickup. Can you tell me what year engine this might be ?. I have a few more pictures. Stamped on the four corners of the block are 1,4,U, B.. Bottom row of eight head bolts. Water pumps in block.

Well, it's a 59 (on bellhousing) so 46 to 48.

were these 46 - 48 engines a decent engine to re-build ?.

Yes, a very popular motor for fitment into any V8 powered car up to 48. Biggest problem is cracks. Some are fine, some live with minor cracks, some cracks are common and most engines have them, but cracks around the centre web and the pan rail are not uncommon and hard to repair.

Someone might caution him regarding supporting that engine as shown, on that engine stand. Not generally considered a good idea. JMO
Might want to check the bore - 3-1/16, or 3-3/16 ?? Look at the head shown - suggests it might have been used as a 'replacement' engine for earlier car ??
The 59 suggests it was cast post 1945 - could be a 3-1/16 replacement ??
Still, my favorite flathead to work with. And, would be one of my first choices for a 35.

29A heads were 1942 Mercury but may have also been used during wartime on 239 engines. the 59A heads relpaced them in 45.

I would say it is a 42 Mercury or truck engine . It has relieved valves.

46-48 truck engine, factory relieved, 239CI, 3-3/16 bore std. A good engine to do any thing with. Might want check those heads for valve clearance, think there 42 heads, Years ago all the Ford dealers had a tool to cut the valve pockets in the heads to fit the 59 engine. Walt

The 29A Mercury engine would have still had the keystone shaped water port in the center of the deck. 59 blocks all had the round ports.

39-42 239 blocks (99) had round center water port.
59 blocks had round center and lower water ports.
39-42 221 (81) continued keystone as earlier blocks.

Not sure about the Mercury engines, but the Ford engines had the so called "raised intake" surface on the 41-42 blocks didn't they?

Jakno: A 221 59 replacement engine had pre-war 221 crank/rods
Just check rod caps. 239s 39-48 should have 99 or 29 #
39-42 221 should have 91 or 21 # as would a post war 221 59.

Hey either way , up to shape, good engine to run
