'35 Throttle Spring Install? More muscle?
I've got my throttle hardware mounted to the firewall, now I'm trying to muscle the return spring up around the throttle arm. Do I need to eat more Wheaties? There doesn't appear to be away to lever it into place and I'm not going to get it by hand.
I can see from the firewall paint that the previous owner fought this, too. If the spring goes on BEFORE it all bolts to the firewall, I don't think I could pull the bolt into position to go THROUGH the firewall. Any ideas? Thanks.

I usually put the spring on before, same as if it is a complete assy I was installing.

Re: '35 Throttle Spring Install? More muscle?
In looking at this spring closely it appears a lot heavier than the old ones I have. It also looks heavier than the ones I see offered online. I’m thinking it’s a bad repop the last owner installed. There’s a lot of that going on with this car.

I actually drove over to my brother’s to check out his ‘36 and yep, his is lighter than the one I’m trying to install. This car has lots of funky stuff on it, so no surprise.

A deep well socket with an extension slipped over the outer end of the spring will give you the leverage that you need to get the end of the spring over the vertical arm of the assembly once the assembly is attached to the firewall.

Thanks Kube and David. I mic'd the spring when I pulled it back apart and it is indeed considerably heavier than stock. When I get the right spring, I'll use your advice.

I found the repo springs were too heavy also. I bought a NOS from SS Obsolete.

If you are struggling, it can be made easier if you disconnect the linkage and allow the arm to drop down (and the pedal raise).
Mine are ok but are original. I hook them on and off with a bent pick. On my truck it eases engine fitment if the spring is removed so the arm sticks up instead of out. |

Re: '35 Throttle Spring Install? More muscle?
Disclosure: my car is a hot rod.
I drove my 32 for a decade and always walked (limped) away from an hours-long ride due to the original return spring. A few years ago I took it plain off. I installed a small spring from Stromberg on the throttle shaft, and a modern style spring to another bracket pointing forward from the dual carb linkage. Much easier now on my old joints. |
