Stuck 1940 Ford Door Hinge Pins
The door pins on my 40 tudor are rusted in place solid, and all attempts to remove them has not helped.
I have heated the hinge and pins with a propane torch and then tried to drive them out from the bottom up, tried to drill them out but drills dull(I think the pin material is hardened), soaked the hinge with PB blaster, and nothing works. I have another set of doors waiting to go on, but short of dynamite I cant get the existing pins to budge. Any remedies? |

Many have had good luck with a 50/50 mixture of acetone and ATF, keep applying.

Re: Stuck 1940 Ford Door Hinge Pins
That 50/50 mix sure does work for me. I was unable to get a flathead brass machine screw out of my 24 T windshield frame and was afraid I would mess it up before getting it out. Used the mix, let it soak over night and then screwed it out like it was a brand new fitting.
Every time I use it I think of Ol'Ron as I believe I heard it first from him. Fourdy |

Re: Stuck 1940 Ford Door Hinge Pins
One method I have used with good results is to grind off the head of the pin then center punch the pin. Drill a small hole almost all the way through the pin but dont go all the way. Keep increasing the size of the hole untill you can put a straight punch in there and it will bottom on the remaining pin that didnt get drilled out , then drive the pin out the bottom.

Re: Stuck 1940 Ford Door Hinge Pins
Had the same problem on a 40. Took the doors with hinges off the car. Soaked for a couple of days. A friend held the door upside down and set the hinge on a large solid vise on a solid workbench. I wacked the pin real hard several times with a drift pin and heavy sledge. It worked. I think having a solid place to set the hinge on is important. Trying when on the car is not solid enough.

Re: Stuck 1940 Ford Door Hinge Pins
I used the Drake tool on my hinge pins.First I had tried propane and no luck. I moved up to accetylene got it glowing red hot and it worked for me. As I was heating up the hinge I sprayed water on the door metal around it to keep it cool . BINGO!! By the way I said I used the Drake tool .When I was done the Drake tool was ready for the garbage bin,It is not what it is cracked up to be .It was like one of those throw away cigarette lighters. But it did work [once]
