Ring gear replacement

When removing the old ring gear, after heating it up, do you tap it forward toward the engine or backward toward the transmission???

FORWARD! It can't go backward because of the stop ledge on the flywheel. Be sure to put the new ring gear on with the beveled teeth facing towards the REAR, or the Bendix drive won't be able to engage to the ring gear to turn over the flywheel and hence engine. Lots of guys have put the ring gear on backwards and later had to pull everything apart to correct this mistake.

By the way, don't waste your time and acetylene heating up the old ring gear. Just hack saw it in one place and the gear can then be tapped off easily. Use the heat to put the ring gear ON the flywheel.

Marshall I was told just heat the ring gear in one place, then drive it off before it cools

if it is driven off it will damage the retaining ledge

Cut the ring with a hack saw. Heat the replacement, chill the flywheel. Install the new ring.

On the flatheads I would place the flywheel in the freezer for a couple of hours, heat up the new ring gear in the bar-b-que for about 5 minutes. Make sure that I had it in the correct position and it dropped right on. This is where a large shade tree makes the best place to work under.
Have an explanation ready for the wife when she finds the flywheel in her freezer... Chap

Kinda the same as when she finds engine parts in the dishwasher getting cleaned
