Does anyone have a Model A coupe-pickup?
Hello, my name's Jayce my dad and I have been cleaning out an old barn my grandfather had. When we opened it we were met with a hell of a project Model A. I'll give you the story of it: Back in the 70s my Grandpa and my dad were really getting into old cars they were scooping up as many as possible and were mainly giving them away and trading them off for other stuff (parts ect). My dad knew about this old Model A 5 window coupe with a pickup bed in the trunk, it was a 30'. This particular Model A isn't chopped up, it basically just had the trunk lid pulled off, then a model A pickup bed shoved in the back. Usually every week or so my dad would walk to this mans house, his name was Walker. He would ask if Walker was ready to sell them the A, but he got the same answer every time, no. After about 5-8 years later, Walker sold it to them, I don't know the exact price, but it was cheap. My grandpa put it away in an old barn he had to keep it safe, and left it there ever since. Its got no motor, radiator, interior, glass, or front fenders. But luckily my grandpa had horded enough parts to rebuild it.
My main question, does anyone have anything like this on here? I would love to post pictures but it's covered in parts, dust, and wood. My dad and I are going to pull it out when Summer starts and I'm out of school, and I plan on doing a full frame-up restoration. |

Those look fantastic, I really can't wait to get to restoring this one. I was planning on restoring a Model A Pickup, but after I found this, I'll get two for one, which is great. The one on the right looks exactly like it.

This is how mine looked when I got it back in 2013. It had been stashed away since 1958.

There's one floating around Tacoma somewhere. I think it would be a great car to leave as is. Just get the mechanicals in good shape.
Went on a garage tour yesterday and there was a 36 Chevy coupe-up with factory? Aftermarket? Literature. |

Jayce,
Welcome and you are lucky to have such a great project. I think those cars are really cool as they show the versatility and ingenuity of people who have used these cars throughout the decades. Mike

Re: Does anyone have a Model A coupe-pickup?
Here are a series of pictures that one of our club members took to document the conversion from coupe to pickup. There are a lot of reasons for this to be done but during WW2 you got more gas for a pickup than for a car. Just by sliding in a bed you got more gas.

Re: Does anyone have a Model A coupe-pickup?
The '36 Chev coupe/pickup noted above was probably an imported Australian Ute.
I can still picture (from the late 1940's) a 1930 or 1931 Model A coupe-pickup, owned by the filling station and used for their service truck, where my dad used to fill up his 1941 Chev coupe with "ethyl." Some of the station attendants had to ask my dad what do you mean by "ethyl?" The station was in Nordeast Minneapolis, N.W. corner of 13th Avenue and Main Street. I think the name of the station was "Chose Brothers Sinclair." Some things you never forget. |

Re: Does anyone have a Model A coupe-pickup?
Here's mine. It was used as a utility truck in the orange groves in SoCal when we got it. The conversion had to have been done sometime before 1956 as I found receipts and other items dated 1956 and later between the seat and truck bed. I drive it frequently and have no intentions of changing it.
