New Brake Lining
Is the new brake lining sold today thicker than normal? We relines all the shoes and cranked the adjusters all the way out and still can't get the drums on easily. Bob

Re: New Brake Lining
Is this the front, or the rear?
If it's the rear, then try the drum without the parking brake installed. I've seen guys trying to install shoes with the brake adjusting shaft turned the wrong way, so the angles didn't match the adjustment cone. |

Re: New Brake Lining
I usually run the shoes over a belt sander gently to remove any high spots, and to chamfer the ends. That is usually enough to clear the drum.

Re: New Brake Lining
Many of the vendors sell both normal and thick linings.

Re: New Brake Lining
Thanks stewwolfe, glad to know there is standard and oversize. This is an early AR without the parking brake, looks like I'll be sanding things tomorrow. Bob

Make sure the shoes are "centered" using a centering gauge... also, use one of the outside mic drum gauges to check the outside width and then compare to the inside width of the drum. My bet is things aren't centered and shoes aren't arced to fit the drums. All part of a comprehensive brake job. Larry Shepard |

Re: New Brake Lining
I agree with Larry and was wondering the same thing. I haven't had to sand standard linings to fit the drums. The only lining I had to sand was the parking brake lining on a 1930 AA I worked on. I used my hand held belt sander and it fit well after a light sanding.
