Frozen oil filler screw on fan pulley
The oil filler screw on the fan pulley was over tightened at some point and now it won’t budge on my 8BA.
I haven’t been able to remove it since purchasing the car. Is there an extractor that works on flat-head screws? If not… what is the procedure for removing the fan pulley assembly from the block? I can probably remove that screw with the pulley removed from the block… As always, thank you in advance! ~Steve |

Re: Frozen oil filler screw on fan pulley
To remove the 8BA fan hub pulley you have to remove the bolts that hold the fan hub carrier bracket and drop the assembly down. Then loosen the big nut that holds the generator in place and remove the belts. You may find you have to remove the fan from the fan carrier bracket in order to wiggle it out OR remove the top radiator hoses so you can pull assembly up and out. That way you won't ding your radiator.

Easy Out!
The flat head slot was mangled to the point an impact was unable to bite. Drilled and used an easy out—-and it easily came out! Thanks to those who shared suggestions!! Last edited by 38convsedan; 11-24-2023 at 05:40 PM. |

Wow! You are one of the few folks who have had success with "easy outs" as they can be "not so easy". Good going.

Re: Frozen oil filler screw on fan pulley
If you had to drill through the screw, chances are that some metal particles fell into the cavity within the hub. It’s easy to take the fan assembly apart…..I’d suggest doing so in order to give the inner parts a good cleaning. Reassemble and fill with oil as was explained above. The correct amount of oil will stay inside.

Re: Frozen oil filler screw on fan pulley
Don't forget to put a rag under the pulley to catch the excess oil also DON'T FORGET to remove the rag befor starting the car

Re: Frozen oil filler screw on fan pulley
Mac VP, Actually, I drilled only into the screw head and did not engage the thread shaft.
I was fortunate the easy out was able to bite enough to release the screw at that depth. Thanks for the advice, 47Monarch!! Forgetting to remove the rag is something I would totally do!!! Last edited by 38convsedan; 11-25-2023 at 09:50 AM. |
