It's a belt drive so most likely a number to use to match up with the other end pulley (like ring and pinion numbers) to get a specific drive ratio.

Looks like an old power take off device , The wood is unusual, I seen one made of metal, my pop said they used on the farm to power up stationary equipment ,such as thrashers , hay balers irrigation pumps etc. a now deceased friend told me the Ford axles were geared just right for task,The chevs. were prone to break the axles. He said during W.W II
he and a friend would use the family pickup to winch old mining equip etc. from flooded mine shafts to sell for scrap in support of the war effort, Amazing what an old Ford could be used for. Neat find!!
fordestes,

I thought the same thing initially, but that would mean the diameter would be about 7.32", and it just looks a bit bigger than that. DD

It is a power takeoff pulley. It was used to operate some kind of a machine, like a grain grinder. There were probably many machines it could be powered with, as noted above. One rear wheel would be jacked up off of the ground, the wheel removed, the attachment installed, and a flat belt run from the car to the machine being powered. These actually had some real value at a time when most farms did not have electrical power to operate such machines.

Sorry. I just read the first message and realized we didn't answer the question. I don't know what the 23 is for. Could be some kind of size reference.

Thank you for the replies,input..royalryser,yes,I'm looking to see if someone can tell me what he 23 is might be for. I myself did a some belting chores when I was younger, grind feed, bucksaw and planer work. Stationary engines, tractors, hit miss engines. I was thinking it would be pretty neat possibly hooked up to my 47 panel and possibly belting some corn grinder or something at a show. How would this work, jack the truck up and just put it in gear? Has anyone ever hooked a belt to their truck or car with a pulley?

Harvest, I think you got it right. Block the front wheels of the car, put on the belt, move the car to tighten the belt as needed, put it in Low or Reverse and let out on the clutch. Should be kinda fun.

Maybe you should tighten the belt before you block the car!!!

Yes , the belt pulley would be a good guess. I wouldn't do it very long, it would be tough on the spider gears.

There is an apple press / chopper in our area that has been run off a pulley like that. A WW2 Jeep is the power source. I've never heard anyone worry about spider gears.
(We also run it off an old pump engine, one lung, hit / miss, same belt & pulley)
As for the 23, is it about 7.3 in dia? That would make it circumference, as already noted.
