mufflers under my 39
Next up, since we're running with my new 8ba engine in the car now, is an exhaust system. The 39 frame is stock except for the crossover where the T-5 sits. (Anybody need the stock one?) I'm looking at Van Pelt's mellowtone mufflers. Anybody have any experience in what fits/sounds good? This is a built 270 in. flattie with a lopey idle.

Re: mufflers under my 39
Brockman's in Hagerstown Indiana make a good custom muffler. You specify inlet dia, outlet dia., case length and fiberglas or steel packing. A good USA-made durable product. Several 'Barners use them, I believe.

Alot of guys are raving about the Porter mufflers. Go on line and check them out. There is a video on the sound of them. I have a pair on my blowen flathead in my 34 three window.

Re: mufflers under my 39
I have about the same engines in my '40 coupe and PU.
I run straight pipes. They sound beeyootiful! I was worried about them being too loud, but they aren't. Sound great. Ken CT talked me into it. |

Re: mufflers under my 39
What diameter pipes do you recommend if running straights? 1 3/4" or 2" Or other?

Re: mufflers under my 39
1 3/4" gives the best sound.

Re: mufflers under my 39
The 2" pipes won't crackle as much as the 1 3/4" pipes. The smaller pipes will give you that classic flatty sound.

Re: Your song may be different - same pipes
Guys - I would think that pipe diameter is only part of the equation ie bore size (cubic inches), valve size and cam specs, compression ratio, carburation, header type, exhaust routing etc. I am running 2" straight and have modified all of the above so would imagne that what I hear singing out the rear may not be what someone else would hear in their application!

Re: mufflers under my 39
I think cam and headers make a difference in the sound.
I have a '40 coupe with 245" and a mild 3/4 cam and headers, Edmunds heads and intake. The 1 3/4" straight pipes really crackle. Also '40 PU with 250" stock cam and exhaust manifolds, Offy heads and Fenton intake. 1 3/4" pipes and this one is noticably quieter than the coupe. Still has a nice crackle and sounds great. I was worried about them being too noisy, but not so. They're a LOT quieter than most Harleys. |

Re: mufflers under my 39
i've read that smaller pipes cause the exhaust to flow faster,= high pitched sound & bigger pipes flow slower = deeper sound. i guess this makes sense.

Re: mufflers under my 39
I agree. The 1 3/4" has a sharp snapping sound and the 2" has a base sound. Marv

Re: mufflers under my 39
I should not have read this thread. On my 39P/U, 59AB after my Red's was going to run Brockman's (Vic P.) approved, but now I need to hear some more flatties with/without mufflers to see what I want

Re: mufflers under my 39
I am afraid to say what size mine is and there is only one of them! but the thought of a early morning drive by of the earlier morning 4 bangers house is sounding very appealing, next spring it is........Dual Stainless 1.5" would be a very large upgrade.
