Default Another "Be nice to dummies day" question

I have spent considerable time searching around, and have found H.P. ratings for flatheads a lot of places, but I am interested in torque output. Is there any site, or does anyone know the torque ratings on stock, or even mildly built 59A and/or 8BA engines. Also would like to know the difference in 8BA and 4" Merc. of same years.

Owner's manual for my '47 59A-B engine says torque is 180 ft lbs at 1200 rpm.

36tbird, NO, I can't have asked 16 dumb questions already today. Oh, that's the difference in torque. So is 8BA same torque as 59A-B? OOPS, snuck another one in.
Thanks.

Old Henry, Thanks also.

I wonder how accurate H.P. and Torque ratings really were. Other manufacturers "cheated" some.

JWL's book "Flathead facts" has the torque ratings of stock and dozens of modifications.
Probably the best Flathead book ever written.

I know that I need to get a couple of books, Ron, but I live on straight Soc. Sec. and that is it, so I have to save up to get both your and JWLs books. I am managing to pick up some flatheads and parts by trading for Buick, Cad, Olds engines and parts that I have had in my shop. I really do appreciate all of the information I get from the people on this site. While I have been into cars all of my life, I haven't messed with flatheads since about 62 or 63, so it is just like starting in kindergarten again for me.

Here's an interesting horsepower (not torque) chart for various modifications of the flathead: http://www.35pickup.com/mulligan/hotrod.htm

Henry Ford did some tweaking of published horsepower. The model B reportedly had more horsepower than the model 18, as did the 6 cylinder over the V8 ...or was that available torque?

This is a good chart for reference. Since horsepower is a calculated number from torque and speed, the torque of these engines can be determined by multiplying the HP times 5252 and dividing by the speed.

Torque = HP X 5252 / RPM

I hope that this helps.

Thank you everyone. Your effort won't go to waste. It will greatly help me with what will probably be my last complete car project, and will be passed down. It seems as though my youngest son (30 in 10 days) has gotten a serious case of "Flathead Fever".

Again, Thank You all for your effort in answering an old dogs questions.

I'm sure a lot of you know of this site, but I found it and thought I would pass it on. Maybe it will help someone.
