I just put a call in to Bubbas and found that Jim Linder is stepping back on his business and taking a break for the next several weeks. I am in need of finding someone to do a rebuild on a 1938 double sided helmet type distributor and was hoping to use Jim's services since I've read so many great things about him. However, that doesn't seem likely now. I do need to get this distributor reconditioned in the next couple of weeks and am looking for alternatives. I would appreciate any help that you might be able to provide in the way of recommending another service option for reconditioning this vintage distributor.

actually i have a couple three bolt, three bolt coils done up hanging on the wall...they run $150 plus $18 shipping......

Why not look up Jim's tutorial and DIY?
And, Charlie, for sure, will do you good.
And, another idea... how about Cliff Green, who advertises in the classifieds of V8 Times? (Personal experience - I have one of Cliff's distributors)
This is not to diminish the other suggestions.

Whom ever you choose, be sure they use a machine to set up and check the distributor. Repro points are causing lots of problems now, with condensers running a close second. A good rebuilder will check the shaft and bushings to be sure the strobe reading is stable.

Ford distributor rebuilders back in the 30's, 40's and 50's all used the Ford~Heyer strobe machine. The dwell is set by a dwell meter, not feeler gauges. The two sets of points will measure different after being set on the machine. The end result wanted is the total dwell between the 2 sets being about 82 on most years if I recall. The machine has a tachometer and the distributor is checked at various RPM's. The spring tension is checked with a spring gauge, to much tension wears the plastic shoe that rides on the distributor cam, to little allows the points to float, this can all be seen on the Ford machine. The timing is set as well as the vacumn brake. Vary seldom will the distributor have to be adjusted if properly rebuild. G.M.
