Default Question on gas cap for 1956 Thunderbird

I have a car with the engine removed. I also have drained the gas tank using a plug o n the bottom of the tank. Fuel leaked out if the unconnected fuel line in the engine bay. When I opened the gas cap, a great deal of pressure was released. Is this normal, or is there supposed to be some sort of vented cap?

56 TBirds used a vented cap. You can drill a 1/16 hole in the cap or buy a new one.

The '55-56 Birds use a very thin, flat vented gas cap, they usually have a couple of finger hold ears on the top.. The cap is readily available from the various T-Bird vendors..
