I think it depends on if the Mustang is a C4, 3 speed or a 4 speed. What tranny do you have?

ok, the speedo cable passes through the firewall at the same spot regardless of engine size or transmission. Here are a few pics. Both are 1965 Mustangs. One is a 289 (restoration in progress), the other is an unmolested 6-cylinder car.

The routing under of the cable under the car differs depending on transmission.

This is what the firewall and assorted items look like after 50 years of use, abuse and neglect...

Here's a clean firewall after restoration:

Its kind of a hard place to get to, but here's a closer pic of where the speedo cable passes through the firewall.

hi Frank, the picture that Stephenorf shows is a very common location for the
cable exit hole on the older 'stangs I have worked on.
However, my 2+2 fastback that I ordered new in '65 has a 4 speed, and the
speedo cable exits on the upper left corner of the tunnel, and my cable runs
across the upper part of the trans, and installs on the passenger side of the
tranny tail shaft.
My friend had a '66 'stang with a 289 automatic, and his cable had the exit
hole in the same place as my '65 4 speed car. (left upper corner of tunnel)

I found an old crusty picture of a early stang, and I colored in a blue dot in
that upper left corner to give you some idea.
The automatic cables are shorter than the 4 speed cables, as they install on
the driver (left) side of the tranny tail shaft.
Most of the new cables I have installed, have a thick round foam gasket on
them, so if you have to drill a hole, then get the cable first so you can drill a
hole just a little smaller, so the foam gasket can make a good seal to keep
out dust and/or any water that can splash up there.

Here is that picture I took and then colored in the blue dot, and actually
the hole could be an inch or two higher than that.

Yep, Lanny is right. the cars eqiuiped with 4-speed transmissions have the speedo pass through on the left side of the transmission tunnnel. Here's a pic of a derelict 1966 A code fastback GT that came with a 4-speed. This is from under the car...

For perspective. The arrow points to where the accelerator exits the firewall.

For your 289/auto combination, the speedo will pass through the firwall near the steering column/e-brake cable (see my previous post for pics). It will use the same hole that the 6-cyl used before you converted to the 289.
