Default Late 31 Ford Script Coil

I bought this coil at a local swap yesterday. JS sez July 31 to end of production. Put it on a car this morning and no spark, and it gets warm. Shorted windings. Only gave 2 and a half bucks for it, so no big deal. Is there anyone who can dissassemble and rewind ignition coils? Thanks

that is a 32 coil not Model A, the Model A does not have the oval around the Ford script. other then that they are the same.

Measure the primary terminals for ohms. You should have about 1 1/2 ohms, or, if you put it on a 6 volt battery charger, you should have a reading of about 4 amps.

So this is a Model B coil? It does have the oval Ford script, and the JS shows a coil WITHOUT the oval. I stand corrected. Thanks Mr Hash.
Tom: I put the ohm meter across the two small terminals and get about 30 ohms. Same reading on a coil on a running car. Tried each terminal to the coil case. No reading at all. What am I doing wrong?

30 ohms is too many. Try connecting a small charger with an ammeter and see how many amps on 6 volts connected to the two primary terminals. It should read about 4 amps.

I know Skip Haney rebuilds flathead coils, maybe he rebuilds Model A coils as well. His contact info can be found on the flathead forum without too much searching. Rod

6v battery charger on the two small terminals reads 2.9 amps. What does that mean?

That's a bit lower than I'd expect, but should be OK.

Red face Re: Late 31 Ford Script Coil

Apologies are in order, guys. I also have a rusty 30-31 coil with a huge dent that I tried this morning, and it actually worked! Never tried that one before because it loked so bad. So I thought, this nice looking Ford script coil should work as well. Turns out that it had a lot of crud in the high voltage terminal cap that goes to the distributor cap, so I cleaned it as well as I could with screwdrivers and drill bits, plugged the coil wire back in, and tried it again. Nice spark! Started the engine and it runs OK. So now I feel pretty foolish about running for advice before doing the basic home work. False alarm. I also researched some old theads on the same subject where Tom sez old coils usually work, now matter how bad they look. I can verify that Tom is right. All of my old rusty dented coils will run an engine as is.
