Default Yellow Lincoln convertible

Momma has "The long hot summer" on the tube.. There is a 52/53 Lincoln convertible in it, "Vasser Yellow" Does anyone know if it is the same one used to pull Lucy's trailer up the mountain pass?

Pretty sure Lucy's was a Merc in the "Long, Long Trailer". DD

While the Merc was featured in the Long, Long Trailer, the trailer was actually pulled by a '53 Lincoln Capri Convertible. There are several scenes in the movie where you can clearly see that the car pulling the trailer (up hills) is a Lincoln, not a Mercury. Here's a promo still from the movie where you can see the Lincoln in full view.

That's cool but, the Continental Kit looks too large for the car... In my opinion, I wonder if it is a factory or after-market unit.

I would like to have the car that Lucy and Desi traded in for the Mercury,it was a nice 39 Ford cabriolet. A story a few years back in Old Cars Weekly stated the Lincoln power was needed in the mountains scenes. One of my favorite movies,I remember when it came out and the long lines down the street to buy tickets for it.

Pretty sure the C kit was after market.. I don't think FoMoCo did an option until 55 or 56.

Ford, Mercury & Lincoln had factory Continental Kits available for the '52,'53 and '54's as well. there were also a number of after-market kits available.

Yes, I've read that for the mountain scenes they had to substitute a Lincoln to pull the trailer. Guess the old flattie could not handle the desert heat , heavy load and steep inclines. That was the first comment I made when watching the movie. How does that old Merc do it?
The 53 Capri had Ford's first Y block according to what I have read. They were highly regarded in the Carrera Panamericana endurance races.

Did you see that they added an extra full length chrome strip on the Lincoln. It also appears that they painted over the regular chrome strips on the Lincoln in an effort to disguise the fact and make it look like a Mercury? The average viewer would not have noticed this exchange, but those sharp viewers did notice.

Well Vic, this guy would agree with you on the C kit http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/4867404602.html It looks similar but different than the one in the movie

That kit looks like an after-market, with the full 18+ inch extension. There was a company Hudelson-Whitborn (spelling), I think they were out of Chicago, that made a full 18+ inch extension Continental Kit for the Ford & Merc, '52 to '54, not sure if they made one for the Lincoln...?

I like the kit on CL better than the movie car, but noticed the gas filler lid in the trunk of CL car.. Most definitely and add on.

I just watched this last night and didn't catch the swap from Merc to Lincoln. Pretty good movie tricks, or my incompetence.

That additional full length Chrome Strip that they added on the side of the Lincoln & the fact that they painted over the original Chrome trim helps the disguise the fact. It is obvious that they needed the extra power of the Lincoln to pull this long trailer through the hills.

First "Y" block was 1952 Lincoln along with OHV 6 in Ford cars and trucks.

The old movies were able to get away with pretty crude tricks like that because they were intended to be viewed as a one off event in a cinema and the details like that are not the main focus of attention (part of the plot). Now we are able to watch these things and replay parts multiple times over, we can mull over these details far more easily.

Mart.
