Default My new 48 F-1

I bought this truck back in early December. It is finally here and I thought I would share the progress with you. It is an original farm truck fresh from Kansas. My plans are to get it mechanically restored and drive it. It has the v-8 and 4 spd, the 4 spd. might go however if i can find a good light duty 3 speed. Really cold here so not much has been done but I will try to keep you guys updated.

I have the same year and color truck that you have. It sounds like you're ding the right thing by getting it on the road and safe. Enjoy driving it.

"That's a good honest truck right there.." AMEN!!!! Give the 4 speed a chance. Once you get the hang of it shifting is manageable if you're not fighting big city traffic. Also if you don't plan to use her for heavy hauling, you might get more bang for the buck by installing a taller set of gears in the back.

Nice solid looking truck. I am looking at one in the same condition with the wrong engine and tranny ( late 50's early 60's ) at $3500. Do you mind saying what you paid. Private message OK if you don't want to post it. Good luck with it.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. The trans is staying for the meantime so I might get used to it. I was told the drivetrain and brakes were done long ago and it appears to be true but they need to be gone through. Truck sat for a good time after this was done. I drove it off the trailer but barely. Just want to make it a mechanically sound truck as I love survivors. I do need a tailgate for it as the one on it is beyond repair, just a wall hanger now. It came with a new interior and the seat has already been done correctly. It needs a full wire harness, some seals replaced and some body work on the fenders but I am not going to go overboard. I want to preserve the look. I do want everything to work though. Wipers, heater, all lights, etc.

I have an wanted ad for a tailgate on a few sites but if anyone has one let me know. I will post up more pictures of it when the weather breaks. It is too cold here to do anything.

Great truck ! I'm just curious ( and ignorant !) - why do you want to get rid of the 4 speed ? Are they no good in these trucks ? I have a '52 w/a light duty 3 speed , and have thought perhaps a 4 speed would be better . No ?

The four speeds are double clutch specials - the three speed versions can be driven without the 2X clutching, They are just a bit easier to manage according to some.

The 4 speeds had no synchronizers so they had to be double clutched to synchronize the engine speed with the trans. I learned how to drive with one so it doesn't bother me. Too bad. Then again -------.

My wife took this pic after I got the hideous original front bumper off. It had a very ugly guard welded to it. Being an old farm truck it had really over zealous bumpers front and rear. I have removed them both. Total time to remove them was almost 4 hours because both were bolted and welded to the frame. I have another almost perfect grill that I will be putting in it too. Notice that damaged lower bars.

Make it safe and drive that puppy. The greatest enjoyment comes when you get the looks and comments from folks who come up to you in a parking lot to see the it up close.
Most of us have been "tinker'n" on our vehicles for quite awhile. (9 yrs here). I would hate to get it totally finished because then I would have to find another one to start all over with.
Great looking truck, enjoy the 4 speed before you swap it out. Double clutching is becoming a lost art, kinda like talking on a smart phone.

Hey guys, where was the horn located on these trucks? I had my hood open yesterday and I was looking but it appears it is gone. Where does it mount? Is it hard to find a replacement horn? pics would help.

I've got a 49 F1 pickup that has the Ford flathead 6 engine with a light duty 3 speed tranny behind it. I am wondering if a Flathead V8 will bolt in where the inline 6 now resides, or if I would I have to install a different bell housing etc. for the V8 engine?

The Flathead 6 could probably be made to run, as it turns over with the starter, but the V8 is just a bit more appealing to me. Don't the inline 6 engines get any respect these days?

I'm doing the same to my '51 F1 and am wondering the same thing.. the 226 is very tired so I'm rebuilding an 8BA for it. Probably a subject worthy of a new thread altogether.. I'll probably rebuild the 6 after I get the 8BA swapped in. I think the 6 is still a good motor, just a little more difficult to find parts for and less sexy is all...

My old 51 F-1 had a 4 speed and I liked driving it...however I did pick up a 1952 four speed as they were fully syncronized but never swapped it in

Good looking truck!

good info there Chris, I didn't realize the 52's were fully syncronized. How hard was it to find? I may want to go that route if I could find one.

I had bought a 52 F-3 for some parts and my good friend Bob Pike informed me that starting in 52 they went full syncro. So I really do not know how hard they are to find. I also had a three speed out of a 6 cylinder truck I thought about installing (mine had an I6) but got laid off and I regretfully had to sell it.

LOVE IT!!! You can't buy patina that deep. As you have said, I redo the mechanicals and wiring Be sure to refresh the brakes: DOT 3 loves to drink water. A few coat hangers and your tailgate will be just fine.

Save them PATINAS!!!!!!!!!!

She is fighting me at every turn. Every bolt I turn breaks, everything I buy for it doesn't fit. Removed the tailgate in anticipation of the new one and all 4 nuts that are a caged nut broke off inside the stake pocket. Gotta love working on old cars or this would drive normal people crazy!

The bracket you have in front of the radiator on the drivers side is should be the horn bracket. The horn hangs vertical with the trumpet down. The bracket should be almost triangular with three bolts holding it on. The horn is the same as the '42-'47 trucks but the bracket is different. Your horn bracket will bolt on to the earlier horn.

Today a couple of thing actually went well. The door latch mechanism on the passenger side was rough, the door handle on the inside did nothing. I took it all out and took the latch apart. There is a nub that broke off and would not allow the handle to work. After seeing some parts of a stock latch all apart I was able to weld the nub on in the correct shape. Greased it all and put it back together. Works perfectly.

I now have a question regarding the trans swap. I have a line on a complete 3 spd. light duty trans, driveshaft, trans mount and floor cover plate. Is there anyting else I would need? Will the clutch swap over? Not sure what size is in my 4 spd. Any help with this will help a ton.

Horns are easy to find, as mentioned, it's on the drivers side in front of the radiator. It's bolted to the inner skirt and points downward. I a few extra used ones here if you're interested. PM me if you want one.

Yes, the clutch will work with either. It may have the 11" clutch, the larger trucks do. I would leave it, you are less likely to have clutch chatter with the larger clutch.

Thanks for the clutch info guys. The guy I am buying the trans from said I need to swap the flywheel and clutch assembly and that didn't sound right to me.

He might of been saying you should swap the flywheel and clutch assembly, which is not bad advice. But you do not "have to" swap them. Your current setup is way heaver than is needed which reduces acceleration, is harder to use, etc. But if you are just wanting to drive it around and are not concerned about performance it should be fine.

How much of a noticeable difference can it be though? The whole reason I am doing it is because number one, I am used to 3spds. and I live in an area that is pretty heavily congested. If I was out in the sticks I might opt on keeping it. I also hate double clutching, I hated it so much in my model a that I swapped in a 39 trans with a clings adapter. Best thing I ever did.

The 11" pressure plate weighs 2 pounds more than the 10". The clutch discs are probably a pound or less different. You would never notice the difference. The 11" clutch will work just fine.

Sorry to disagree but there is a big difference. It has to do with where that weight is located and momentum and acceleration. There is even a big difference between a 10 inch clutch and a 9 inch clutch setup. I would never go larger than a 9 inch myself. The 11 inch will work and may be fine for the application, but you can't say you won't notice the difference because you will!

I just swapped a 4 speed for a HD 3 speed. I used the 11" clutch. Stop and go traffic aint no big deal.

For a truck as heavy as it is and especially if you are going to use it as a pickup I would leave the 11". An inch bigger clutch will not make or break anything.

In my low (37,000) mileage '48 F-1 I replaced the 4-speed crash box with a regular (light-duty) three-speed. Kept the original clutch - didn't even take it off the flywheel. Drives like a new truck! Very happy. If it ain't broke don't fix it!!

excellent, thanks for the feedback guys. do you guys leave your spring packs alone when it comes to the ride of the truck. She seems very stiff with all those springs in there. I am going to be hauling with it occasionally but nothing too heavy.

Another question for you guys, how do I get the ignition switch out? Does the bezel hold it on? Can't seem to figure it out.

IIRC, it has been a while since I took mine out. Push the back of the switch toward the dash, like you are trying to push it thru the hole from the back. Turn the stainless bezel and pull it off, then take the switch out from the back. I can look tomorrow afternoon and double check.

The bezel should snap off. Then get behind the switch and push it towards you and turn it to clear the hole in the dash. It's actually not very hard if you do it right.

Got it off, thanks guys. Is there any source on the correct screws that hold the door inspection panels on? They are a counter sunk flathead sheetmetal screw. The vendors are Phillips head. I went to a local hardware that has everything but they didn't have them.

Have you tried Roy Nacewicz, he will have them or know if you can get them:

Great thread, love the truck.
I will check on a set of used inspection cover screws. A guy local here has a whole pile of takeoff stuff!

On another note, I am in need of s light duty 3 speed for my 50. If anyone has any tails I can chase I would appreciate it.

48-50 used a slotted screw for the access panels and 51-52 used a Philips screw. That's why you see so many mix and match parts. The part numbers you need are:

32924-S7 #10 x 1/2 inch slotted binding screw qty 14
34952-S7 External tooth washer qty 14

Ford did not sell the screw and washer as a set, you had to buy separately.

If you need any other part numbers, PM me as I have a lot of Parts catalogs from my days in Ford parts.

Those are Ford hardware numbers such as screws, bolt's, washers, etc... Regular part numbers are completely different. I thought you could use them when you call Roy N., since he can use the numbers to see if he has them. I also checked with a parts locator I use to find obsolete parts and nothing came up. You may have to also call around to some of the parts guys and give them those numbers, as most don't list hardware numbers on the locator.

Been a little while since I have worked on the truck but did manage to get something done this week. My tailgate hinges were both broke. Trying to remove them was a challenge. The inner cage nuts that are inside the stake pocket broke on all 4. Only solution I could see was to cut out the area, find new cage nuts and rebuild them. I now have a functioning tailgate. Threw some red paint on it and tried to blend it in to the stock patina.

Last couple of days I have been working on the grill. I bought a nice used grill but it was for a later truck, it had no holes for the trim. Before I went and drilled the holes in my used grill, I tried to see what I could do with the old one. I found the lower two pieces of trim on here (Thanks guys!) and they match the rest very nicely. I want this truck to be as original as I can. After about an hour of hammer and dolly work I got the original one back into shape. Looks so much better without those two lower smashed bars. Now I can sell the grill I bought and put that money back into the truck somewhere else.

Old and New

I had an old Ford truck with a 4 speed and only 1st gear was non synchronized. It was also pretty useless, untill I had to pull a trailer full of bricks. So just pretend it just a 3 speed , till you need alittle more grunt.

My brother stopped by yesterday to see it, thought I would start it up for him and as soon as it started, smoke started coming up from under the dash. This is not the first time as it is a cobbled mess under there. So today I gutted it, going to re-wire the truck now a bit sooner than expected but I need it to move and drive so I guess the wiring is first.

Crap I found behind the dash

Old wiring harness, sad shape.

Dash stripped.

I put this cluster together using the original face plate (trying to not restore too much) and some gauges that I bought that were working in a pickup that was being hot rodded. Why do the circuit breakers differ?? One has much larger breakers than the other and they are not staggered the same. Is it a big deal? Are they both the same just different manufacturers?

Difference in circuit breakers

The breakers on the left are the correct ones. I suspect the others are some kind of aftermarket or off another type of vehicle.

The breakers on the right, separate from the gauge cluster, are correct for a '48-'50.

Lol, so which ones are correct? The breakers on the right (seperate) are what was in my truck. The cluster with the circuit breaker attached is a spare cluster I bought.

Mark's correct, the manual shows the difference on p. 276. But I've seen the 51-on type on 48-50 dashes, too, may have been a running change?

So I would probably be ok running either one? The ones on the right that were in my truck were causing the smoke. Previous owner had removed them from the cluster as they were taped to the cowl arm with electrical tape. I have no idea why. But they came into contact with the choke cable and started sparking. Do you think they are still ok. Also the previous owner had a twelve volt battery hooked up.

Maybe different assembly plants had different suppliers for the circuit breakers. That wouldn't be the only inconsistency on these trucks between assembly plants. Seems like the more you work with these old trucks the more you have to rule out the words always and never.

Say good bye to the 4 spd. Today I had some time between work and a family get together and the weather was perfect. My 48 is now a light duty 3 speed truck. Swap was fairly easy but I would never have imagined the weight of the 4 speed being so heavy. One person doing it is a chore but had the swap done in under 2 hours.

Old 4 speed on the way out.

4 speed out, nice looking pressure plate and clutch

3 speed in

Managed to do the whole swap, driveshaft, etc, in two hours. Not bad.

Some of you know that I have re-wired my truck and had some problems, I think I have it all figured out finally. I also lost the fuel pump this past week so I got a new one and it got here today. I put it on and it took me some priming but she fired up and ran very nice, no vibrations, sounds like a sewing machine.

I decided to take it for a spin around the block. Ran great for about three blocks then stalled. I could not get it re - started. I got some starting fluid and it needed a bunch of shots down the carb to get it to start. When it did start it ran like a champ and got me back home. I shut it off and waited a second and hit the starter button and it fired on the first crank. Am I good? Why do you think it stalled?

Started it today and it started pretty easy, no choke was needed. It gets warm pretty quick and the temp needle always goes past half way. I have an original shroud for it that I am going to put on. Do you think that will help bring te temp down a bit? I do not know if it has thermostats in it.

The shroud will certainly help. You may benefit from a system flush.

Need to figure out what temperature your running at. IR or a mechanical gauge or something. The stock gauge is not going to tell you actual temperature.

So no 3 speed manual trannys need to be double clutched? I was told from my dad that my truck a 48 ford f1 had to be double clutched and have been going through it quite heavily for the last year or so, so I haven't had but a round or two around the block in it and kind of wondered why shifting it was suck a bastard! Maybe the old man was wrong?

3 spd. manual trannies from a Model A need to be double clutched but every other 3 spd. 32 on that I have driven does not need it. Straight cut gears are what requires it.
