New tires
I got my new Excelsior radials and finished mounting them tonight. JEGS said they would take about a week to arrive, but it was half that. I made the change from whitewalls to blackwalls. I had gotten accustomed to the whites, but am happy with my choice. I have not taken it for a test drive yet. That will need to wait until tomorrow
Before with the old tires After with the new Excelsiors. |

Re: New tires
Did you go black because of the significant price difference between the blacks and whites ? Wayne

Re: New tires
I am a fan of whitewall tyres but have to admit that the blackwalls do look great on that dark body. I think you have made the right choice. The wheel colour complements the body colour and sets it off nicely. Well done. Many happy and safe Model A miles to you.

Re: New tires
And for anyone out there who is unsure if they should go to black or white walls, here is an alternative middle of the road choice. Somehow I don't think there will be a rush on these.

Re: New tires
I also use and give a thumbs-up to the Excelsior Stahl Sport Radial tires sized for the Model A. Whitewalls are not available, or at least were not when I bought my tires from Coker about 3-4 years ago.

Re: New tires
Speaking of whitewalls, see this 1931 advertisement showing a Model A "Slant" with whitewall tires, and also notice that whitewalls are located on both sides of each tire!

Re: New tires
As was said the radials are not available with white walls. I had decided to go to blacks a while back and recently decided on the Excelsiors. They are about $100 more per tire. Ouch. My old tires were not completely shot, but I am driving the car to the MARC meet in Niagara Falls, so I wanted good tires. BTW, my spare is barely used, so that will remain a bias ply white due to cost. Tacky, I know.

Re: New tires
Last year at the SEMA show I was talking to Corky about adding white walls to the Excelsior line and he said he would look at it and had me talk with another guy that was in the booth so maybe we will get white walls yet!

Re: New tires
Tires look great! I have my rims blasted and ready to paint. They were cream when I bought the car so I am staying with that color. I have 4 new black walls ready to be mounted. I was waffling between white walls and black walls and chose black. Happy to see yours with the rims.

Re: New tires
Thanks for all the comments. I wasn't sure whether anyone would care about my new tires.
It's a pretty nice car that I bought two years ago. I have not driven it more than 100 miles round trip, so it will be an interesting experience. I have made some upgrades since I bought it and tightened things up a bit. I still have a list of to dos, but if that guy can buy a car in Oregon and drive it to Mississippi or wherever he ended up, I should be able to make it to Niagara Falls and back. I am not new to Model As, but it has been a long time and I have learned an awful lot on FB and through membership in both clubs and through two chapters. My car is a nice 10 footer, but it runs like a top and has never let me down. I have driven a thousand miles or so since I bought it. I liked it so much, I bought a second an year and a half later! I suspect I am not done yet! |

Re: New tires
When non-Model A strangers see and appreciate your very beautiful car, I think the last thing they will comment on is what is the color of your tires.
In my opinion, whitewall/blackwall tire discussions are becoming more and more a jovial Model A Forum Thing among friends on this Forum ....... deep down we all know that well restored good running Model A's like yours are not depending on the color of their tires. Thanks for sharing two (2) wonderful photos and an encouraging update on your progress. And please never quit talking about tires ...... with all of our high blood pressure worries in 2015, we will all live much longer concentrating "only" on something as simple as Model A tire color.
