This was the first year for the Mercurys. They were only available in four different body styles as illustrated in this original 1939 Sales Folder. Breakup of sales figures seem hard to come by. I did find these Production Figures:- Convertibles - 7,818. Tudor Sedans - 13,216. Town Sedans - 39,847. Sport Coupes - 8,254.
These Coupes are great looking cars with the thin window surrounds that look like the hardtops. They were ahead of their time.
By the way, Take good care of these Globes on the front seat. Put them on display in your garage.

There was an article in Hemmings Classic Car within the last year, I think, about the development of the first Mercuries. It was a reprint from the old Special Interest Auto, but an interesting article nonetheless.

We have the "same" car. I hope you plan on changing the headlights back to the 39 style, otherwise it looks like a 40, which to me, isn't as pretty of a car and even though we have a 40 Merc too. I will have to get the number of ours for you, I do know it is an early car, Dec of 1938 according to the frame #. We have two 39's a VERY early 39 Town Sedan, Oct 1938 and the Coupe Dec 1938 and a late 49 Four Door Convertible #971.

That is truly the type of car that you could get running and still enjoy it just the way it is after a clean up and some TLC with lubrication service and complete repair of the fuel and braking systems.

You could have fun with it and fix it a little at a time. Those are the best types in my book.

This is exactly what I plan on doing with it, my dad and grandma want to sell it, but I'll fight as hard as I can to keep it.

My Pop kept his old 1951 Merc around till he knew it was time to make a change. I had already purchased another 51 to restore because I didn't think he would ever get around to doing anything with his. After he could see that I had enough interest to restore one, he finally gave it to me. Now I have two but I am going to concentrate on the one from my own youth now.

You might find this to be true in your own situation but you never know until the ink is dry on the title. My Grandad had a 1929 6-Speed Special IHC truck left over from his farm days that my Pop really wanted to fix up. He got it running and cruised around the farm in it some. My Pop came home from town one day and found the old truck was missing. He called his Pop up and found out he had sold it to one of my Dad's farm hands. The farm hand wasn't around very long after that. I figure all he had to do was make it known what his intentions were and Grandad would have let him have the thing. He sold it for only $25.
