1940 Ford deluxe coupe windshield wipers
I am in the process of reassemblying my 1940 deluxe coupe and need to get the windshield wiper mechanism installed. I bought this as an old neglected project car and have absolutely no parts to the windshield wipers. I was thinking Specialty Products cable drive would be a good way to go, but they replied in my inquiry to them that the holes are too close to the windshield to use their product. I just looked in Bob Drakes catalog and now I'm really confused on what I need.
My question is: Do any of you have suggestions on what I should use to get my windshield wipers working? The car is not stock, so I want a good 12 volt alternative. Keep in mind that I need to purchase everything. Thanks |

Newport Engineering has a unit that uses all stock '40 components ( transmissions, linkages, etc.) and will clear the cowl vent. 3 yr waranty. I've been looking at them for a while; I'm just not far enough along yet. http//newportwipers.com

Re: 1940 Ford deluxe coupe windshield wipers
I can't tell you all the options, but I used the Newport Engineering drive motor and reproduction towers. I don't know how the original worked when new, but the reproduction towers have a little slack in the chains. I use RainX all the time and just use the wipers occasionally when going slow, etc. When I bought mine Newport offered either a two speed unit or one with one speed and delay.

Newport for me, nothing but good experiences on four cars. You will need to buy everything except the motor from Drake or Carpeneter, better yet, Dick Spadaro. www.dickspadaro.com

Re: 1940 Ford deluxe coupe windshield wipers
I have had the Newport in my 46 coupe for probably 12 years and 50,000 miles with never a problem and one in my 53F100 for 3 years and never a problem. Of all the people I have heard talk about their Newport set up, Milt is the first problem I have ever heard of. I have many friends running them.

Drake's is not a Newport, I don't believe. I bought one from another supplier a few years ago that looked like the one Drake sold. I did have problems with it and replaced it with Newport.

Drake and I think Speedway have copied some Newport systems. Bob says that it's hard to stop other companies from knocking off his products. Must mean they're good.

Re: 1940 Ford deluxe coupe windshield wipers
Well Okiedokie it sure looks like a Newport, but maybe it's not.I think the problem I had is with the set screws. It's really hard to tighten the set screws without taking it out which is hard to do,also.

Re: 1940 Ford deluxe coupe windshield wipers
I took the collar off my extra wiper motor loosing both set screws. One set screw tightens the clamp around a finely splined shank(like wiper towers had in the fiftys),and the other set screw digs into the finely splined shank when tightened.Anyway after seeing how it was built I'm not I want to drill a relief into the shank.

Re: 1940 Ford deluxe coupe windshield wipers
I have name brand parts coming, but you guys have me worried that it will just be for show - and not actually work when it rains. I like everything to work on my cars, so I'll do whatever it takes to get there. Again, thanks for the information.
