The Best Way To Secure...
My family has a vacation planned soon at a resort. I would like to take my `35 Cabriolet with me as there is a cruise-in and a car show in the vicinity the week we are there. Besides, it would be nice to putter around in during our vacation. I don't have a hidden kill switch, the steering lock works, I don't have keys for the door or rumble seat and having the top up provides little protection except from the weather. The old gal doesn't look like much but I would sure hate losing it and thefts are at an all time high on almost anything of value. I know most of you have the same concerns. What are some good ways to make sure it will still be where I left it the night before? Sleeping in it is not an option...
Thanks, Shadetree

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
I usually check with the desk clerk and ask if I can park it under the canopy or in plain view of the desk where they can keep an eye out on it for me. Never had anyone refuse, and never any problems with vandalism.

Like Lawson says, check in with the resort - they may be of alot more assistance than you might think. Also, a car cover does wonders - the "out-of-sight-out-of-mind" approach to car security.

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
I agree with Lawson and Tom, having the car parked close to the hotel lobby is your best insurance.

Depending on how far your room is from your car: one guy told me that he leaves one of the remote baby monitors in his and keeps the receiver in his room.

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Assume someone might pull up with a trailer or tow truck and haul it away.
If you can't leave it in sight of the front desk as suggested, run a chain around the axle and lock it to a power pole or tree. |

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
get one of the motion sensor alarms, if the car is moved just a little a loud siren goes off, i dought if any one would stick around more than a few seconds with one of those blaring in the night, even if ne had a tow truck, get one with the paaaive little light that flashes red its a small light that lets the guy know it has an alarm and its armed

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Take the coil wire with you. Put a club on it. Chain it and lock it to the trailer. Don't stay in any big cities. Pray.
I like the car cover too. |

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Wasn't it just a few years back that someone stole truck, trailer and show car in Columbus Ohio at a Good Guys meet?

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Around Fl there has been trucks (fordf150s) and trailers stolen. Most of the trailers have lawn equipment in them and maybe what they are after.
Traveling doesn't bother me it's the overnights that are nervy. Maybe I'm just a worrier by nature. You could do this and you won't have to wire it in. Just put the cellphone under the seat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95r7CBcHsRY |

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Tinker,
What a great idea. I am not savvy enough to wire up that telephone but looks like it would work. I think my phone will last up to 10 days turned on if not used. I am a little paranoid when I travel anyway. I hate parking lot dings and always search for a place to park where my car will be safe. My mother-in-law once told my wife she might as well walk to the store rather than ride with us. Shadetree

Really good article on anti theft devices in the new Street Rodder magazine this month. Lots of good ideas.

Claymores work well, but only once.
You could put one of those dog shockers under the seat cushion where the guys boys are, set up a perimeter. Sizzle. Chain a rabid Hog to it. Put a Denver boot on it. |

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Any of the above, an improvement on removing the coil wire is to make a dummy wire with a piece of vacuum hose. It might delay the thief if he's looking for a kill switch, he probably would look at the coil but think it's OK. Anything to make it take more time, the last thing a thief wants to do is hang around too long.
The cell phone is a great idea even if you silence your every day phone. Oh yeah, park next to a nicer car in the parking lot. Let that be the one of first choice. |

Re: The Best Way To Secure...
Whenever I took a trailer to a show or swap meet I put a heavy duty cable around the axle and thru at least two wheels, then around the nearest telephone pole (or whatever big sturdy pole or structure is handy). I bought about 50' of real HD cable and a pack of 4 real HD hardened locks. Remember, without securing the trailer/car to something permanent, a thief could easily snatch your property on a rollback and be gone in no time flat. Keep it parked and secured in a high visibilty area. The idea is slow the thief down so much he knows he's pushing it to get away before someone calls the police.

chain or cable it to a pole, or sleep in it. the cell phone tracker would also be a good idea. clubs, boots, ignition interupters and anything else that keeps it from running and driving are not even gonna slow down a guy with a rollback. |
