Coupe, Coupe, AA, Tudor. A's did not come with a spare tire, it was extra. The rim was included though.

Looks like he's pulling at least 9500#.

That's a pretty good load for 40hp, no matter how low it's geared.

That trailer would have been made of steel, and not light. Given that the trailer spare also does not have a tire, I wonder if this is an advertising shot?

I don't know, a compound low gear it might have a good chance to move it. Might only be going about 25 at top end though. Also noticed that it is going down hill.

I have driven a fully loaded AA fire truck that was pretty heavy. It moved along just fine. The torque is what makes it happen. HP doesn't mean squat. Example- 18 wheelers. 80,000 pounds or more move along just fine with anywhere between 200-500 hp, but thousands of lb/ft of torque.

The 1980 VW Rabbit (Westmoreland) that I owned had the then standard 40hp diesel engine. An enthusiast at some time put a dynamometer to the engine and was somehow able to measure the actual horsepower necessary to drive the car at speed.

11 horsepower at 55mph.

What made the low peak horsepower diesel engine able to compete in modern driving was the torque curve for the diesel.

There is something to this torque discussion. If you ask someone that builds mild streetrods, they will tell you that a car that gives the sensation of power has good torque. Had a grandmother that had a small block 69 Chevelle. Her husband always said "That car of Ruth's has more guts than any car I have ever owned". A factory small block in the car.

I was talking about the trailer spare not having a tire. I see the first coupe also doesn't. Even if the trailer spare had a tire I doubt the driver could change a flat

Is that a water bag hanging from the front bumper of the AA?

The original photo is from the Oregon Historical Society and there is a very large hi-res version of it on their website as well as a rear view.
