Armored Wire?

The dash light in my 31 Tudor is hooked up with an armored or metal covered wire. You use to be able to buy this in bulk from model a suppliers. I can't find it in their catalogs. Does anyone know of another source?

i just wonder why would one need armored wire? I can understand it,s need in aircraft igntion use, but that, about it.

Hi,
i can,t understand where one would need armored wire in a model a. Armored wire is used over aircraft ignition leads, but that,s about it. As i understand it, armred wire is needed to keep high voltage current from leaking over to other wires. What am i mssing?

Al,
I can't answer your question. I do know that in 30/31 cars Henry ran an armored or metal sheathed wire from the ammeter to the dash light. If I had to guess, I would say that he did it to protect the wire from getting snagged, pulled, and possibly broken or shorted when you turned the light switch on.

I want it because I have a pair of era turn signal lights that I am going to mount on my pickup. The armored wire looks similar to the headlight and horn conduits only smaller. I was going to use it to hook up the turn signals.

The wire to the electric wiper on my1929 Phaeton is an armored cable. I don't remember what other open body styles used the armored cable, but I think there were a few.

It is used where a wire can be pinched and grounded out.

I just double checked the books and according to the Judging Standards, "The single wire on open cars was a stranded conductor with conventional insulation surrounded by a spiral metal armor."

I got a piece of what Bratton's sells for my '31 dash light, but it was a bit too big. It would not fit through the little notch in the top edge of the instrument panel. I was able to fix up the original wire.

But modern PVC insulation is a lot sturdier than the old rubber insulation, so a piece of modern wire would be fine for non-show use.

Maybe the wire is armour coated so it doesn't wear through at the little notch where it exits the instrument panel.
Remember the second choice was cloth insulation...
It could even arc and burn a hole in the gas tank

Then of course you would lose gas and get bad milage and smell funny when you came home at night and if you had an interior light switch the car would explode
