1940 Deluxe Steering wheel Removal
I want to replace the current steering wheel on my '40 Deluxe. I have removed the horn button and observed the horn wiring, with button, coming through the steering column. Can someone advise the best way to proceed for steering wheel removal without damaging wiring?
Thanks, Daryl |

Re: 1940 Deluxe Steering wheel Removal
Push down the the horn button and twist it off. It is spring loaded and will pop off.
Disconnect the horn wire where it snaps into the horn relay on the left frame rail. Use a steering wheel puller with two 5/16-24 fine thread bolts. Screw the bolts into the 2 holes on the inner hub of the steering wheel and "pull" it off with steering wheel the gear puller. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER TYPE OF PULLER as these work the best without damaging your steering wheel. http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...uller/_/N-2652 Last edited by 19Fordy; 08-28-2014 at 01:18 PM. |

Re: 1940 Deluxe Steering wheel Removal
I'd listen to what 19FORDY has advised.
Use a timing gear puller. There are two threaded holes in the hub of your steering wheel for this purpose. 5/16 - 24 thread. If you are intending to install a Drake wheel, be forewarned... they typically do not fit well. The taper is either too large or too small on everyone I have had. Too big? You'll need to shim. Too small? You'll need to grind the taper. Apparently they do not have gauges to check such dimensions in China.

Re: 1940 Deluxe Steering wheel Removal
Thanks Kube and 19Fordy. I did get a 'Drake' wheel. BUT, now Drake, Carpenter and Vintique have apparently 'teamed up'. They each only carry the Vintique wheel and it is made in Taiwan. Will I have the same taper problem? Do you know?
Thank again, Daryl |

Hopefully you'll get a "good one". If it IS Vintique, it'll probably be crap like most of their stuff. I just attempted to install a Vintique glove box liner in a 46 a client had dropped off. It so so far off there is no way it can even be modified to fit. Total garbage and yet these places survive. Incredible.

Re: 1940 Deluxe Steering wheel Removal
I must have got lucky with the Vintique wheel I fitted into the pictured 40
I read an article in Rodders Journal about aftermarket wheels for the 40 Ford and thought this one sounded best. I painted the dash, steering column and wheel hub the same color. I left the smooth glossy black rim unpainted because I thought it would stand up to wear better than any paint I could use.

My Vintique 40 style wheel has also held up well.

Re: 1940 Deluxe Steering wheel Removal
Well, I did it.......... However, there were 'issues'. After installing the new wheel, I tightened the bolt and noticed there was some resistance. I removed the new wheel 'to check it out'. I discovered that when the wheel was tightened to where it was snug it was tightened against the steering column housing (the outer portion that houses the steering shaft). I hope I am NOT boring you! anyhoo, I removed the wheel and compared to the original '40 wheel. On the original wheel, when viewed upside down, it showed that at 3/4" from the wheel center shaft was a ridge that 'dropped off' about a 1/16". On the Vintique wheel, there is no 'drop off' and it continues to the outer edge of the wheel hub. My fix was to use my Dremmel tool to grind on the column outer shaft a 1/16". I basically trimmed it to smooth it out. I than raised the front wheels of the car off the floor and and turn the wheel left to right; It seems to be OK. IT LOOKS GOOD! Of course, I still have the original wheel and will be restoring it in the future; I may restore the original wheel and re-install, depending on how it goes. Thanks for listening........
