That does sound like an aluminum timing gear. While it likely hasn't done too much harm to drive it till now, you're gonna find yourself stranded one day soon, and with considerably more aluminum debris in your oil when that happens.

Is the stock gear aluminum?

Aluminum timing gear in a 60 === VERY VERY RARE & highly unlikely.
Stock is fiber.
Also remember the oil pump is gear driven of the timing gear on the crank, the oil pump gear could be fiber or aluminum.

Tony, I didn't know that about 60's, but it does sound like aluminum, not fiber. If it is the oil pump, that would be unfortunate.

A lot involved just to take a look. Right? Distributor, motor mount /water pumps, timing cover and cradle the motor with a chain.

I agree with the aluminum timing gear. Almost sounds like a transmission whine. Really loud for that low of speed though.
