Default Carb rebuilder

OK, like a lot of you guys, I have rebuilt a fair amount of 2 and 4 bbl carbs. Usually involved a kit and a can of carb cleaner, ending with acceptable results. My 39 Merc is just so darn original that I would like to have the carb restored as much as rebuilt. I have perused the ads in V8 Times and elsewhere, but would really welcome any first hand recomendations for a known high quality carb rebuilder/restorer from someone here on the Barn.

Thanks in advance,

I'd suggest CharlieNY on this forum. Good guy, does good work and delivers what he promises.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, much more confident sending something of value to someone with "references". And yes,........years ago I learned to avoid Mr. CP.

It doesn't get any better than Uncle Max on Stromberg carburetors and I believe that is all he rebuilds. I am not sure which carb you actually have on your '39 Mercury. Charlie NY is also very good on rebuilding carburetors of many types and fuel pumps as well.

If you're '39 Ford is original, that was the first year of the Holley 94.

When you say restore that changes the game, since it is a Holley then send it to the Holley Carb Shop. They'll restore it including the coatings and irrides etc.

OJ,
Would you have a web address for the actual Holley Custom Shop? Doing a search yields plenty of carb shops that work on Holleys, and a link to the article that Hot Rod did 4 years ago (with no contact info). Going on Holley's main web page and doing a search for Custom Shop yields nothing relevant. I am sure it's out there, just not finding it.

I had the Holley Custom Shop bookmarked, and now when I go there it just brings me to the Holley homepage, and can't find it anymore. Maybe calling the tech. help number they list can be used to ask what's up.

If you're carb has good coloring when cleaned up, to me, that will be a lot more original than having it dichromated again. Plus they don't really come out the same color as original. Not very often anyways.
I know a lot of people frown on using coatings like Eastwood's Carb Renew, but it sure saves a lot of money and if detailed correctly look pretty good.
Here are some pictures of a carb I did with the Eastwood coating. I also do all carbs and advertise on Ford Barn. 46 years experience and all work guaranteed.

I believe if you want to keep your Mercury absolutely original, you would want to find a Chandler-Groves 91-99 carburetor. Most folks don't realize the 91-99 designation was because the Ford part prefix designation for 1939 was 91 and the 1939 Mercury was 99.

I sent a big block Ford carb to Holley for a rebuild. I was disappointed that the zinc finish was a type of rattle can spray paint.
That was several years ago, maybe things have changed.
For Stromberg 97's, my Uncle Max is the man. Unlike some person to claim to rebuild these with a handy can of silver paint. UGH!!!

This is a common and often repeated misconception. Chandler-Grove carburetors were discontinued in late 1938. They were replaced by the Ford carburetor.

I beg to differ.
Chandler Grove without model number was '38 only, along with Stromberg.
Chandler Grove with 91-99 was '39 along with Ford Script 91-99.

A side note on the 91-99 model number: The first such designated carbs had that number etched directly into the molds. All following were within a circle, as they were replaceable with later model numbers, the circle being a removable coin fitted into the mold. All the early models through model 59 were capable of sharing the same molds.

Chandler Groves was done supplying carbs to Ford in 1938. Why does this Ol'wives tale continue?

Mike, we're not interested in corporate details, we speak to the physical appearance of the carburetor itself. Ford acquired the CG molds and license, then simply added the F.

Was the Chandler Groves the first version of the 94 style carb?
I really like the CG carb. So much I'm running three of them on my Hot Rod!
