Default Help: Super Winfield head

Howdy,

I have a Super Winfield head. Cast aluminum, I imagine. It says "Pat. Pend".

I got it a few years back in a collection of parts. I may offer it to a friend but I need to know a few things about it. Any information would help, including how it enhances performance of an A's engine, price, etc.

Thanks.

Jim Gordon in LA(Rosemead ) repops the Winfield in Aluminum for around $300. They are not flycut, and I had to flycut mine for clearance. It runs real sweet and has lots of torque. The only Super Winfield I have ever seen was cast iron, and it sold for way over $300.

Here's the one at Red's Heads:

Head - Winfield for Model A & B
$335.00
· 1928 - 1934 Model A & B,
· Made from new 356-T6 Aluminum,
· 6:1 or 7:1 Compression

Is a Super Winfield and Winfield the same? Mine looks near identical except for the name. Unfortunately Red's didn't have a photo of the combustion side. I am unable to post a photo of mine. The circular space right above the piston is almost non-existent.

I am able to do some mechanical work but am not very experienced. Would a high compression head need to be installed any different than an original head? Different gasket? Sealant?

What are the driving advantages to using a Super Winfield? I realize that many A's have a sweet spot at 45mph. Would a high compression head raise that to 50 - 55? I ask because I have a chassis that will be used for a driver. I am 7 miles from town and the road is a 55mph one.

Thanks in advance for all replies.

The Super Winfield was a later produced aluminum version of the cast iron winfield. I believe that it wasn't Ed who made them. Ed Winfield was a believer in the use of cast iron heads to make the most power.

They are reproduced by an outfit in Rosemead, CA. I don't recall the name, I will have to dig into my files. I have visited them and have one of their heads that we have yet to install on anything.

Please forgive the brainless question -
If I put on a Winfield head with 7:1 compression, do I need to do anything else to my engine?
Thanks in advance!

The Super Winfield was made by the same Ed Winfield. Most of his originals were iron but a few were in aluminum, which is odd because Winfield once told us "if you want to make hot water, use aluminum, if you want power, iron is best". My recommendation for the average touring A would be the Winfield yellow head, 6:1, also available from Jim Gordon. (in aluminum)

Make sure your bottom-end is in good shape...

I wouldn't put one on a tired engine...

Jim,
you told me back in the 90's when I bought my Super Winfield aluminum head that they were built, the aluminum ones, by Bell auto parts. You pointed out how they tried to match the font of the word Winfield when they added the Super, but it's different...

Hey - thanks a ton for the comments & suggestions. I've got my 29 which is an aluminum (speedster) bodied A. I had a company in Spokane rebuild an engine and do a bit of balancing and reduction in flywheel weight. They've got a good reputation so the bottom-end should be good. I'm just looking for a good way to give it more umph while maintaining the original look/feel etc. Would the Winfield yellow head the best way to go about it?

TK - what would you do on the ignition?

Thanks again! I'm looking forward to running it around this summer. Last summer was great but since the tired engine was still in it, I had to stay pretty close to the house... and had a good trail of smoke to follow me by.

First on the cosmetic list is to get rid of those dang lights. I've got 29 light buckets but need to find the guts...
